A story about "Crazy, Stupid, Love" — 1 year ago

    WORTH CONSUMING!

I do not find Steve Carell particularly funny and I couldn’t really empathize with him in this role as the ditched Dad. What made this film fun was the variety of “doomed” relationships, from the schoolboy crush and the office romance to the singles dating scene and stale marriages. Somehow, the directors manage to guide them all to one big backyard brawl, the best scene of the film and well worth waiting for. Kevin Bacon plays an introverted accountant and Marisa Tomei gets her acting stretched as a sexually repressed school teacher along the way, too. Lots to like other than Carell.

    WORTH CONSUMING!

Mila Kunis makes this film work, and it is worth watching just for that. Timberlake just isn’t leading man material and she manages to prop him up throughout. Lots of stereotypes, from the personalities of LA and NYC as cities to what it’s like to work for a major magazine. Some fun cameos by Emma Stone, Masi Oka and Andy Samberg. Patricia Clarkson as Kunis’s mom has a great small role that could have been expanded. A feel good ending, of course.

A story about "Rise Of The Planet of the Apes" — 1 year ago

    WORTH CONSUMING!

Creating a prequel to a franchise as entrenched as “Planet of the Apes” is a high-risk undertaking. There are already millions of fans waiting to hate it or love it. But I have to hand it to director Ruper Wyatt … he pulled it off and in a grand fashion. The original films only hinted at how the apes rose to power. This film makes it clear, too clear, that human greed and mucking with mother nature was to blame. I absolutely loved all the “easter eggs” hidden in the film, from name references to scenes like the firehose. The “escape” to Miur Woods over the Golden Gate Bridge was sensational and worthy of the franchise brand. This movie cleverly set up the possibility of a follow-up to show the decline of humans, but it is not at all necessary. The “origins” questions have been answered quite nicely here.

A story about "Cave of Forgotten Dreams" — 1 year ago

    WORTH CONSUMING!

Fascinating journey to explore ancient cave art in France … not just stick figures but some really talented animal drawings from 35,000 years ago.

A story about "The Debt" — 1 year ago

    WORTH CONSUMING!

Despite Helen Mirren’s absence for half the film, as Jessica Chastain takes her place as the “young” Rachel Singer, this film works pretty well as a thriller, trying to hunt down a Nazi war criminal in East Germany then Russia. Not the best or worst of spy flicks of recent mintage. I found it enjoyable.

A story about "Faces in the Crowd" — 1 year ago

    WORTH CONSUMING!

Anna, played by Jovovich, has “face blindness” and can’t identify faces, not her lover’s, or her father’s, or the rapist-killer whom she saw commit murder. It’s an interesting concept that keeps the viewer guessing throughout. Good acting by Jovovich, as usual, and an interesting small part for Marianne Faithfull as Dr. Langenkamp. Replacing the “usual” Hollywood ending is something more real and satisfying, too.

A story about "Contagion" — 1 year ago

    WORTH CONSUMING!

As epidemic movies go, this one adds to the genre by introducing lots of “coping behaviors” missed by other films, from looting and hostage taking to the tension and distrust between competing health organizations, governments and law enforcement groups. Whole cities struggle to remain “normal” as over 28 million people die. It is one scary movie, revealing how ill prepared we may be for a real Outbreak or “Andromeda Strain.” Well done.

A story about "The Incredible Hulk (Widescreen Edition)" — 1 year ago

    WORTH CONSUMING!

Watched this in anticipation of the new Avengers movie coming out and found it to be much better than expected. Loved the way they stuffed the boring “origins” explanation into the title credits at the very beginning, which allowed the action to start from frame one. Clever. Norton was good as Banner, and Roth made a proper opponent. The Brazilian scenes really gave a flavor of life there, a great contrast to the campus scenes in the latter part of the film. The action just ripples. And a cute cameo with Lou Ferrigno to boot. Well done.

A story about "Main Street" — 1 year ago

    WORTH CONSUMING!

When you discover an indie film by a new director with a dynamite cast (Firth, Bloom, Burstyn), there has to be a reason that everyone signed on. In this case, the script is VERY contemporary, a dying North Carolina tobacco town faced with the opportunity to use hazardous waste as a path to prosperity. But it is not told as morality play. It is very much about individuals and how they face the threat – opportunity – future. I was impressed.

A story about "I Don't Know How She Does It" — 1 year ago

Sarah Jessica Parker’s voiceover narration makes this feel much too much like “Sex and the City” without the female bonding that made that series so endearing. It’s all about being Super Mom – a career woman with young children juggling the various aspects of her life. The moral of the story, if there is one, is that “life is messy, so get on with it.” Sorry, but I go to movies to ESCAPE that reality, not to indulge it. Two thumbs sideways.

A story about "Captain America: The First Avenger" — 1 year ago

    WORTH CONSUMING!

One of the best Marvel Comics-based origins movies yet, it is amazing watching Steve Rogers (Chris Woods) transform from a 90-lb weaking into the muscular “First Avenger.” A tribute to the old version of Cap’s uniform is accomplished through a US0 tour at the outset, but it doesn’t take long to get him into some real fighting gear to take down Hydra and the German war machines. Nifty how they manage to skip ahead 70 years at the end, too, and the tie ins to Tony Stark (Iron Man) through his father Howard Stark are nothing short of genius. The entire Avenger Team is now ready to assemble in May 2012. I like this so much better than X-Men working to create the origins after three franchise installments.

A story about "Hugo" — 1 year ago

    WORTH CONSUMING!

Scorsese proves again why he is one of the best film makers ever. In this case, he steps way outside his comfort zone to deliver a “children’s movie” that rivals any Spielbergian “ET” or Joe Dantesque kids’ flick. In many ways, this film is less about the main character “Hugo” than the real French cinema pioneer George Melies, whom I remember from my college Film Appreciation classes way back when. The production values are incredible and well deserving of the many Academy Awards received. Mark this down as a modern “classic.” It will be around for a long time to come.

A story about "Bridesmaids" — 1 year ago

    WORTH CONSUMING!

I’ll admit there were enough chuckles to keep my interest, but the story is episodic and doesn’t hang together very well. It is at its best when the bridesmaids are interacting, a bit slow in the “romantic” bits and “roommate” bits. The Bonus Features on the DVD were a lot of fun, from the deleted scenes and gag reel to “line-o-rama,” which is just a ton of one-liners strung together at a fast pace. Melissa McCarthy is a hoot!

    A story about "The A-Team" — 1 year ago

Sorry, just not my cuppa. I did not find these versions of the A-Team characters particularly likeable. Some originals do not need to be remade, and this is one of them.
