    NOT WORTH CONSUMING

I was not so impressed by this “must-read” journal of Lamott’s trials and tribulations as she deals with her newborn. Maybe when it was published, it was taboo for a mother to casually remark that she’d like to throw her colicky baby out the window or confess that she let her infant fall off the futon (twice!), but in this age of mom-blogging, such confessions are almost trite. The journal reads exactly like a, well, journal, not my favorite type of reading material (I don’t even like to read my own journals). I guess my expectations were a little higher.

    WORTH CONSUMING!

It took me this long to read Vonnegut’s classic time travel novel—about Billy Pilgrim, who has become unstuck in time—and of course I now wonder why I wated. I was inspired to finally pick up this novel by the episode of Lost in which Desmond similarly becomes unstuck in time, but I was surprised to find that this novel is not only an exploration of time travel but also a potent anti-war novel and even a fair piece of Zen Buddhist musing. After all, if every moment in your life happens simultaneously and no moment can be changed, living in the moment and accepting all states of life—including death—becomes the only option.

    WORTH CONSUMING!

A collection of “short fictions and wonders,” including stories, poems and other short pieces, as well as a novella featuring Shadow, the main character from American Gods. For the most part, the stories are weird, creepy, fun horror and dark fantasy. Gaiman includes a lengthy introduction with notes on each piece. I found it interesting that he only wrote a story or poem when specifically commissioned to do so—none of these pieces was written on impulse. All in all, I enjoyed these as much as any of Gaiman’s longer works.
