    WORTH CONSUMING!

Notes on the viewing: My best friend gave it to me on my birthday; we watched it with another close friend after my dad’s funeral. The day might have colored my vision of it (like nothing would have been good enough for me to love it) but I was really happy to watch it with friends.

So! I was very excited to see this, but then it never got released in theaters in my city, and the DVD took forever to arrive, so it lost a bit of momentum. But still it’s a pretty good movie with excellent acting, images and music. I thought the story was a bit on the weak side though. They didn’t really explain why Jane went from hate to love in her feelings (though I guess we’re supposed to assume it’s à la Elizabeth&Darcy) which made the whole drama a bit less believable to me.

    WORTH CONSUMING!

For some reason I was really looking forward to Season 5. I wanted to see how they would integrate Dawn, to be in awe of Spike (and the Spuffy goodness) and mostly to finally get rid of Riley!

Season 5’s general plot was much better than Season 4 but it had less “special” episodes, apart from Fool for Love and The Body. Also, the whole Joyce arc came at a really bad time in my personal life which made it kind of hard to get through it. I think that lessened my appreaciation of the season a bit, though of course it’s not the show’s fault.

I thought Glory was a so-so villain, though the duality with Ben was interesting (and could have been exploited better, I thought). However, The Gift is in my opinion the best season finale of Buffy and maybe of all season finales (though I haven’t seen Chosen yet). So that’s that.

About bonuses, well, there a few commentaries – I always like those by Doug Petrie and Jane Espenson, and obviously Joss Whedon’s on The Body (but seriously, why no commentary on the finale?!). The featurettes didn’t strike me as particularly interesting; I liked Buffy Abroad and the one on the stunts (it was cool to see James Marsters saying his stunt double isn’t his stunt double but instead just another part of Spike).

So, not the great season I was waiting for but not the worst either!

    WORTH CONSUMING!

I bought this the day my father entered the hospital and I knew it would become a bit of the soundtrack of these gloomy days. It’s full of emotion and really represents the movie well. I love the Will&Elizabeth theme, it’s so pretty and really expresses their story well. My favorite is Up is Down though, also because it’s a great moment in the movie!

    WORTH CONSUMING!

I bought this because there was a 3-for-2 sale and I didn’t know what else to get! I love Ewan McGregor and I guessed I’d see it someday. My cousin (who has the weirdest taste in movies!) decided to watch it with me.

I had never heard of Beatrix Potter before (I don’t know much about English children’s literature, being French Canadian and all) so I enjoyed discovering her world at the same time as her story. I loved the whimsiness of the movie, I thought the animation they sprung out of Beatrix’s illustrations was very beautiful.

I don’t like Renee Zellweger much but what can you do. I did love Ewan McGregor, though his mustache was horrible! ;)

    WORTH CONSUMING!

Something else I bought in France last summer! It took me quite a while to listen to it because I was afraid of not liking it that much. Which is exactly what happened! I knew a few songs by Les têtes raides and loved some&hated the others.

It’s the same for this album. Some songs are lovingly beautiful (Les choses) and some really grate my nerves (Dans la gueule). Sadly I mostly remember the annoying ones. To fully appreciate this album I should make another with all the good songs on it, that way I wouldn’t be disturbed by the bad stuff ;)

A review of "Pocahontas: An Original Walt Disney Records Soundtrack" — 5 weeks ago

    WORTH CONSUMING!

This is such a great soundtrack (to such a great movie, too). I usually buy Disney’s soundtracks in used CDs stores because the originals are kind of hard to find, but for some weird reason amazon.ca suddenly had one in store and I jumped on it! Pocahontas is something of my ultimate Disney movie – I watched it a hundred times as a child.

The score is possibly Alan Menken’s best, which is really saying so much, I’m almost afraid to say it! It blends Native American rhythms with European ones beautifully. It’s full of tones we’re not used to and beautiful melodies. Farewell always makes me cry (really!).

The songs also are great. Howard Ashman’s were big shoes to fill but I really like Stephen Schwartz’s lyrics and I think they make a great team (they probably think so too, since they also did Enchanted together). I love every single song, even the lesser known like Mine, mine, mine (especially John’s part) and Savages with its beautiful mix of voices.
