A review of "So, You Want to Be Canadian: All About the Most Fascinating People in the World and the Magical Place They Call Home" — 1 year ago

    NOT WORTH CONSUMING

This book is just awful. Seriously. And it’s embarrassing to Canadians.

Great sweeping generalizations of all things Canadian and residents of the different provinces. It glosses over anything that might be negative or controversial. It includes lists of every Canadian connection to what goes on in the USA (movies, sports, music) which can be interesting but here it was like, “HEY! Look at how cool and awesome Canadians are and you never even knew it!” To me it seemed a bit condescending.

This book gives the idea that all Canadians are funny, white, polite, say “eh” all the time, love beer, love hockey, and all have the “oot” accent.

Imagine if someone from somewhere outside (and not very familiar with) the US wrote a book about how cool and amazing everything American is based on the redneck comedian boys, threw in some facts and history, ignored the more controversial, negative aspects and then made sweeping generalizations about people from various regions (laid back Californians, rude New Yorkers, southern rednecks, Texas cowboys, etc.).

My Canadian husband had to stop reading after 10 pages.
