Why I want to consume "lemon essential oil" — 12 weeks ago

    WORTH CONSUMING!

Firstly, because I’ve had, used and enjoyed my lemongrass oil for ages, and I was genuinely curious about how different this would be!

    • top note
    • good for concentration and making decisions
    • aids digestion, rheumatism, arthritis, cellulite and acne
    • should not be used – even diluted – before sun exposure
    • boosts the immune system, and can be used for colds, voice loss, flu, depression, stress, lack of energy and fatigue.
    • Lemon oil blends particularly well with lavender, rose, sandalwood, benzoin, eucalyptus, geranium, fennel, juniper, neroli and elemi.

A story about "George tights" — 11 weeks ago

    NOT WORTH CONSUMING

Urgh!! It was an emergency tight-buying session: new summer skirts… no non-black tights! How’d that happen!? Anyway, 2 for £3 from Asda turned out to be no bargain at all, as the damn things (a) didn’t fit, (b) have no stretch, and (c ) ripped waaaay too easily – before I even had them on properly!

This is my second pair, and the same thing happened twice: I’ve bought large (I’m tall, and yes, heftier than I used to be!) and still found them on the very snug side, and in the struggle to put them on my thumb popped through just below the knee without any force whatsoever. Hurumph.

    Right, M&S asap!!

A story about "Pushing Daisies" — 10 weeks ago

    WORTH CONSUMING!

Very quirky, sort of a genuinely saccharine Tim Burton style, complete with voice-over and 1950s-ish colour palette. I had a habit of only half-watching, especially as the supporting characters were a bit 2-dimensional, but it had a charm and was something a bit different.

Why I recommend "A Taste of My Life" — 10 weeks ago

    WORTH CONSUMING!

It doesn’t sound like it should work as well as it does: take one celebrity, and have Nigel Slater do a vague interview-come-cooking show. The celeb element is subtle: you probably learn more from hearing them talk about the food of their youth, and what makes them drool so much to be chosen as their (hypothetical) final meal, than you would from a Parkinson-type proper interview.

The cooking is also fun – definitely not much of a ‘how too’, but it all looks so gorgeous, and the chat spices things up.

A story about "Children of Dune" — 11 weeks ago

    WORTH CONSUMING!

I enjoyed this more than I expected! I’d been forewarned that the Dune sequels were more appendices, and certainly Dune Messiah is a very short volume, tying off Paul Atreides’ story somewhat. However, it’s also a bridging volume between the lives/stories of Paul and his offspring.

I think I was surprised at how much story is here, and how it does stand out in its ownright more than expected. Much like the original, there’s a lot of slow build-up here, meaning the pivotal plot device happens much later than you’d usually find!

You do have to have read the previous volumes, I think, but this was a pleasant follow up. It also sets up a much wider story than the original would have implied, meaning I’m looking forward to the next book or two! :)

A story about "Tomato Tango Couscous" — 12 weeks ago

    WORTH CONSUMING!

Surprisingly okay – nice even! I suppose it helps that regular couscous is utterly flavourless, so almost anything is going to be an improvement ;)

REALLY simple to make up – boiling water, nuke in micro – and tasted nice enough both hot with dinner, and cold for lunch. Tangy tomato is probably as good as description as I could come up with, right enough.

If one failure, it does totally lack that ‘fresh’ feel – unsurprising for something coming out of a packet!

Bonus: it’s only 60p for a sachet, ie 2 generous portions. Definitely something I’ll have in my store cupboard for vaguely healthy-ish lunches, methinks!

A story about "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull" — 12 weeks ago

    WORTH CONSUMING!

I can see why some people dislike this: it’s very slow to start, there are differences in set up from the original trilogy, and the whole ‘thing’ is on a very different track from the originals, too.

However, I still thought it was a huge amount of fun! AND I thought it made a nice addition to a fun series – I mean, were the originals really so brilliant that any deviation makes the film terrible? No.

Harrison Ford does look a lot older – 19 years! – but still manages all the physical stuff amazingly well. The film winds forward those 19 years, and we now find ourselves in 1957, facing the Cold War rather than Nazis. Well, it wouldn’t be feasible to pretend time hadn’t passed, really! Unfortunately, it does mean there’s a bit more ‘set up’ and explanation rather than just throwing you into the story. And a very long build up, imo.

Once it gets going, though, it’s just as much of an adventure as before, just… in a slightly different direction. And really, you cannot complain about plausability here compared to the Ark of the Covenant and Holy Grail – these things are just as much myth as anything presented here, people!

So, go with an open mind, kick back, and just enjoy what there is. The 1980s have gone; the film does well to fit as well with the rest of the series as it does.

Why I recommend "Dairy Milk Double Choc" — 12 weeks ago

    WORTH CONSUMING!

Definitely buying one of these again (especially as my dad ate most of the bar!). It’s like a caramel bar, only instead of toffee-caramel, it’s a thick chocolately gloop. Adds something extra, and lovely gooey texture, but isn’t as sweet as you might fear.

    Yum! :)

A story about "Dirty Sexy Money" — 10 weeks ago

    WORTH CONSUMING!

It just kind of disappeared from the schedules halfway through season one, so I’m assuming it’ll be back. But at this point I’ve consumed it, and it was quite fun – the mystery elements could be stronger, but who doesn’t like to poke fun at the super-rich, all the while drooling over their lifestyle pluses?

    A story about "Radio 1 Est. 1967" — 12 weeks ago

I have mixed views on this album. On the one hand, there are some fantastic songs on here, and a great mix of today’s best and brightest. On the other, there are already damn good versions of these songs – usually better than the version here.

I think the problem is this is aimed at a younger crowd than me – or at least those with younger music tastes. I still love original stuff from the ‘60s and ‘70s, so there was a lot here that I could get my hands on the original from either mine or parents’ collection – and like a lot more. The tracks I liked best were definitely the ones I didn’t really know already.

It’s… karaoke. And not even brilliant karaoke at that – Kylie, Robbie – MUCH better singing voices doing their own thing. Just insipid here. Meh.

Why I recommend "Maya Gold" — 13 weeks ago

    WORTH CONSUMING!

It’s dark chocolate, but with a hint of heat, especially when you put it into your mouth. The orange is very subtle. The darkness means you couldn’t eat too much of it, but the added flavours break up the richness a bit whilst adding to it, too.

    VERY yum! :)

Why I recommend "Chardonnay Pinot Noir Brut Cuvée" — 13 weeks ago

    WORTH CONSUMING!

This was a ‘prize’ in my recent team hell bonding thing, and (what’s the liquid equivalent of ‘nom nom’?) but it almost makes the whole day worth it!

You can’t beat a bit of sparkly. This is dry and crisp and rather scrum. Shame I only got an ickle-sized bottle: although I rather imagine the whole big bottle would have slid down rather too easily ;)

A story about "Iron Man" — 13 weeks ago

    WORTH CONSUMING!

HUGELY enjoyed this :) And great to have a decent superhero movie for a change, as some recent examples have been… a tad disappointing!

Robert Downey Jr. is just brilliant. Not least because he mirrors the character in his real life: playboy who’s been in trouble, getting a second chance or two. His enjoyment of the role is obvious, and the script’s humour perfectly matches Downey’s deadpan delivery.

If everything else seems just to facilitate the Iron Man creation story, it’s so cool – and often hugely funny – that I didn’t mind too much.

    Bring on the sequel :)

A story about "Dune Messiah" — 13 weeks ago

    WORTH CONSUMING!

I wasn’t sure if the sequels to Dune were going to be any good – I’ve not heard many overly-positive comments. However, going in with that frame of mind is probably best, as this was enjoyable as sort of a ‘and what happened next’, without coming close to living up to the scope of the original.

This is a very slim volume, too, really just finishing off one bit of Paul’s story post-Dune.

Why I want to consume "marjoram essential oil" — 14 weeks ago

    WORTH CONSUMING!
    • warming, calms emotions, relieves anxiety and stress
    • used for sprains, strains and spasms, swollen joints and painful muscles.
    • in burner, used for asthma, bronchitis, poor circulation, coughs, physical exhaustion, headaches, tension, insomnia, sinusitis, anxiety, nervous tension and stress.
    • in bath or massage blend, used for arthritis, back pain, poor circulation, colds, detoxification, fatigue, heartburn, insomnia, painful periods, migraine, muscular pains and spasms, rheumatism, anxiety, and grief.
    • marjoram oil blends particularly well with lavender, cypress, cedarwood, chamomile, bergamot, eucalyptus and tea tree.

A story about "Sun-dried tomato and basil pâté" — 13 weeks ago

    WORTH CONSUMING!

    Nom nom nom :P

I won’t touch regular pâté – it’s just too bleugh a thought, and really not necessary. Nor was I really craving an alternative, but this was sitting in a friend’s fridge and came with full recommendations!

It’s pretty tasty, although could be a bit too tomato-y in large doses – I did find it too much until I got used to the flavour a bit. Alas, it does require using within 2 days, which is a bit much for me.

I tried it on seeded rivita, with cucumber slices. Better on chunks of french bread.

Overall: liked it, something a bit different, but an odd thing to find a ‘use’ for, really. And I avoided looking at the nutritional bit, so I can’t even say if it was good/bad for me!

Why I recommend "Dune (Dune Chronicles, Book 1)" — 15 weeks ago

    WORTH CONSUMING!

I’ve owned this book for years, felt I ‘should’ read it as one of the big sci-fi classics, knew I liked the story from the (bizarre, hard-to-follow) film, and yet… Actually, I kept putting it off, thinking it was going to be one of those slogs through hard-going text, but that would be worth it in the end.

Well, I was half right – it was worth it! :)

There is a lot crammed into the 500-odd pages here – I imagine in this day and age, the one book would be done as a 12-volume series. This compression of story does mean you have to keep your wits about you a bit, but it’s really not that hard to follow. In fact, my biggest problem was trying to forget the stray bits of movie imagary stuck in my head, so I could actually focus on a more coherent version!

Story-wise, there is a feel that you’ve come into things halfway through (hence the sequels, prequels and everything else!), but that does up the tension. The start is still a bit slow, scene-setting, but the whole thing is just huge in scope of imagination.

A story about "Tadka daal" — 15 weeks ago

    WORTH CONSUMING!

It’s… mush, quite frankly. But nicely tasty mush (albeit not too spicy)!

Not sure I’d go out of my way to buy this again, right enough – it’s very nice, but didn’t add huge amounts to the meal.

A story about "onion bhajia" — 15 weeks ago

    WORTH CONSUMING!

Stayed very moist. Nice flavour, if a little drowned out by everything else. Still one of the nicer onion bhajias I’ve tried.

A story about "In Bruges" — 15 weeks ago

    WORTH CONSUMING!

    What a… strange… movie!

Yes, it’s funny – most of the audience was laughing out loud at some of the situations, myself included at the beginning. Although I confess, some of the anti-pc stuff was a bit too close to just generally rude as the film went on. Still, at least it’s rude across the board: homosexuality, dwarfism, race and religion all get at least a bit of a prodding. And fat people (excellent scene!). And if none of that offends you, there is a LOT of swearing.

However, the bulk of the film is actually quite dark. After a hit goes wrong, the two hitmen involved go on the run to Bruges (“I don’t even know where f’ing Bruges is” says Colin Farrell in the opening voice over. Long pause: “It’s in Belgium”.) Eventually we get a flashback to the crime (and pay attention: there’s a passing comment a while later that explains the why of it), and a lot of lingering shots of the pain showing on Colin Farrell’s face. It’s actually a pretty good topic, but it does take a while to explain enough not to feel a tad slow.

Overall I did enjoy this: there’s just something surreal and dark and done with a great deal of humour underneath it all. Still, I’m surprised at the solid ‘worth consuming’ here, and an 8 rating on imdb – I can easily see people could be bored with this, or not accept that it’s not all belly laughs.

A story about "Tantalising Toffee Dessert Sauce" — 15 weeks ago

    WORTH CONSUMING!

I’ve been searching for ages for a way to make my dad’s favourite toffee-coated muffins: and this pretty much does it! In fact, it’s much nicer than the shop version as long as you’re willing to suffer a few sticky fingers ;)

This is incredibly sweet toffee sauce – tasting very much like fudge or tablet. It separates somewhat, which lets me use just the really gloopy bit. Does go a bit runny on hot muffins, but … mmm! :)

A story about "Papercraft Essentials" — 15 weeks ago

    NOT WORTH CONSUMING

I’m not impressed. I’ve eyed up the ranged of hideously overpriced craft/card making mags before, but was determined to treat myself to one after my exams. This was the second-cheapest, at £3.95, and seemed like a good first experiment. Plus, the pictures of the freebie paper (you can’t get at it to see, as the whole thing is plastic-wrapped) looked nicer than the one in the more expensive mag.

So, the mag: not impressive. There are a lot of adverts, and a great deal of the ‘inspiring’ features are too heavy on the use of a particular stamp – not the easiest thing to modify to your own tools, methinks!

On the plus side, the technique explanations are really good. There’s maybe one or two I fancy trying… which isn’t value for money.

Oh, and the pretty paper? A6-sized, one bit of each design. And I really don’t understand the bra/knickers designs… O.o

If it was £1 – like the much better Do Crafts mag – I’d give it a ‘wishy washy’. But at nearly four times the price… nah!
