    WORTH CONSUMING!

I quite enjoyed this! A very short series – just 9 episodes – and no clue yet if there’ll be a round two, but it was an intriguing little filler between Termintor 2 (I think you have to ignore the third movie!) and the new one due out next year. I confess, I’m not up enough on the movies to really spot a lot of the continuity, but I think this ‘explains’ some of the inconsistancies.

All that aside, this is about a very driven woman, setting up her own little missions to try and prevent Judgement Day, all the while preparing her son to survive that war. Lena Headey is alright, the young John Connor not too annoying, but my fav character has to be the new Terminator – Summer Glau, perfectly pitched as the machine trying to be human.

A story about "Bionic Woman" — 15 weeks ago

    Insipid.

The charm of the original was the cheesiness. This tries to be modern and ‘real’, and just didn’t offer much at all. Michelle Ryan’s struggle to hold the American accent (she does fairly well) overrides a real emotional tone to her voice, which doesn’t help.

Cancelled post-writer’s strike, and can’t imagine many will miss it.

A story about "Premonition (Widescreen Edition)" — 18 weeks ago

This got pretty bad reviews when it hit the cinemas, which is why I avoided it. But it actually wasn’t that bad – a bit confusing, perhaps, but an intriguing idea that largely (-ish) held together not too badly.

I’m still not entirely sure what I thought of it in its entirity: the ending was weak, I thought, and cool idea aside the ‘moral’ just didn’t click with me. Plus, halfway through I thought this would be the kind of movie I’d watch again soon and perhaps get more out of – and instead, it ended and I had no interest in a repeat. So, wishy washy.

    WORTH CONSUMING!

S’a great thing about visiting friends – trying their ‘new’ foods :)

I was told these taste like Special K used to, which is no help as I’ve never tried S-K!! However, they are nicer than regular cornflakes – a little lighter in taste, less artificial-tasting, and somehow a little more substantial.

A story about "The Torment of Others" — 18 weeks ago

    WORTH CONSUMING!

This is the fourth Tony Hill book, and I’ve previously read 1 and 2. Which is a slight problem, ‘cos whatever happened in book 3 is referred to – a lot. The psychological events have a big impact on the plot here, so it’s perhaps unavoidable, but it’s bloomin’ irritating. And I don’t even feel I can go back and read it out of order, as I now know what happens!

That aside, this was an okay but not amazing thriller. It reminded me of too many other things, notable Se7en (the movie), and The Mermaids Singing – the first Tony Hill book.

Still, it filled a gap in my book reading schedule ;)

A story about "Bombay potato" — 17 weeks ago

    WORTH CONSUMING!

Definitely the spiciest thing in the meal! Yum :)

A story about "Indian Snack Selection" — 17 weeks ago

    WORTH CONSUMING!

Three each of four different snacks: onion bhajia, spinach pakora, vegetable samosa, and aloo tikka.

I do love the kind of meals that come with plenty of interesting asides, especially as it’s not something I can do too often when cooking for one. So, full marks to this for making a nice curry even more interesting, but marks off ‘cos all four varieties – while nice enough – were just a bit on the bland side, really.

A story about "Cranberry & Blueberry Oat Bars" — 18 weeks ago

    WORTH CONSUMING!

I’m getting bored of the M&S ones I usually have, plus they’re a pain to get and on the expensive side, so let’s try something I can pick up in the normal grocery shop!

These are instantly my new favourites! The blueberry/cranberry mix adds flavour and sweetness just under the point of too sweet. The bar isn’t all that big, but it’s very dense, filling a small pre-breakfast (‘cos I struggle to eat much before at least 10am) shaped hole.

A story about "RISK II" — 19 weeks ago

    WORTH CONSUMING!

It’s kind of bloodthirsty really, isn’t it – trying to take over the world? But it’s still one of my favourite board games of all time, and digging out the computer version filled the afternoon wonderfully – by game four, I’d even remembered a tactic or two and managed to win ;)

A story about "Fifth Elephant, The (Discworld Novel)" — 19 weeks ago

    WORTH CONSUMING!

The one where Vimes goes to Uberwald, meets Angua’s family, a tee-totalling vampire, and helps a dwarf sit on a scone.

It’s amazing how rubbish my memory is – although the title did nothing to help! S’a good story, lacking a bit in terms of the Discworld humour levels, and doesn’t seem likely to stick much more in my brain this time ‘round, either. Which means I’ll get to enjoy another can’t-remember-a-thing reread in a couple of years :)

A story about "The Colour of Magic" — 19 weeks ago

    WORTH CONSUMING!

The flaws: a bitty plot (blame the book(s)!); not the cast most people would have chosen; something uniquely British in the production values.

    The good: it’s Discworld! :)

Actually sticks to the plot fairly well, as I remember it (admittedly I have a duff memory), which is both the biggest flaw and really rather unavoidable. The weaknesses of the adaption are the weaknesses of the book: remember, this was Pratchett’s first real foray onto the Disc, and he didn’t know he was going to get another chance or thirty. Thus, we really just have far too much crammed in, jumping from one scene to the next with the slimmest of plots to keep us going.

The real joy here is watching all the little bits bringing the Disc to life. Okay, so David Jason didn’t meet the mental image of Rincewind at all, but Death is just fabulous, with Christopher Lee perfect for the funny little asides (“I think -” oh, ‘scuse me: I THINK I’VE JUST HAD ANOTHER NEAR-RINCEWIND EXPERIENCE). ::grin::

Surprisingly, even the non-Discworld fan in the household thoroughly enjoyed it. It’s silly, it’s fun, and it’s totally inoffensive. And while the story’s not as polished as Hogfather, the film making is a bit better, imo. Here’s hoping more of the series can get a look in – it’s fun! :)

A story about "Mediterranean Olive Wheatgerm & Honey Body Butter" — 19 weeks ago

    WORTH CONSUMING!

It’s not my favourite of the range, due to the smell being a bit… odd. Fine for feet/elbows/etc, but not a scent I’d want to douse myself in. It always made me think of lemons, although it doesn’t really smell like lemon! On the positive front, it is quite a holiday-ish smell, and it’s lovely and thick and rich.

Why I want to consume "Relaxing Tranquility beauty bath moisturising cream" — 1 year ago

    WORTH CONSUMING!

After a hellish week, the recommendation was for “Wine, chocolate and a bath” to get rid of the week. Not lacking for any of those, I still wanted to treat myself (without having to trail too far!) – and this was half price at Boots!

“Relaxing scent of cedarwood and jasmine” sounds ideal – and it’s got to be less fattening than the Thornton’s truffles I could have bought instead ;)

A story about "Digital Fortress" — 20 weeks ago

I wouldn’t mind Dan Brown so much, if there weren’t quotes from dozy people on the front of his books declaring him some genuis, hugely talented writer – ‘cos he’s not.

Like the rest of his books, this is a very readable, fast-paced, perfect trashy beach novel. Silly entertainment.

What it is not is particularly clever, well-put together, or even suspenseful. Or possessing much of any kind of literary merit, despite the quotes.

Actually, right from the beginning it had me rolling my eyes: apparently, no one has ever heard of the deeply mysterious NSA. Ri-ight. The same NSA currently in the comedy TV show I’m watching? And about a zillion movies? Brown loses me instantly as soon as he makes stupid claims like this. The NSA doesn’t need to be impossibly secret for the novel to work, so why bother with the stupid claim? That’s just the start, too.

So, while I galloped through this easily in 2-3 days, happy enough to keep going, I wouldn’t recommend this.

A story about "Digital Fundamentals (9th Edition)" — 20 weeks ago

Actually, it was probably a pretty good textbook, and I probably would have benefitted from reading more of it (my course notes appeared to be a bit on the sketchy side!).

Still. Exam done, book back with library, and with a little luck I need never pick up this or anything similar again!

A story about "Sunrunner's Fire (Dragon Prince)" — 20 weeks ago

    WORTH CONSUMING!

Fantasy fiction really is obsessed with trilogies, which becomes a bit daft when you’re really talking about one six-book series! The end of the third volume definitely leaves questions and dangling plot threads.

Before that, it’s probably the darkest of the initial trilogy. I like that some of the characters are becoming more morally ambiguous, but there’s still a lot of emphasis on marriage and inheritance, and living with power as a moral issue.

A story about "The Star Scroll (Dragon Prince)" — 21 weeks ago

    WORTH CONSUMING!

The second in the trilogy bounces us forwards 14 years, introducing a whole new raft of characters and their names to keep track of! ;)

My decade-old memory of this series was about recessive genetic traits – and it’s in this volume that we see what the other inheritance is.

Otherwise, it’s yet more political plotting, scheming and other bits of nasty work. And also a great deal of slightly girlie matchmaking, as the now grown-up children of our original characters go looking for luuurve… or, more likely, suitable partners to join various princedoms, ensure family ties, blah blah. All a bit slick really, but thankfully the whole is still pretty enjoyable.

A story about "300 Original Motion Picture Soundtrack" — 21 weeks ago

    WORTH CONSUMING!

I do like film scores – especially orchestral ones. They make a great change from classical music on in the background, for a start.

This is a little more lively than some, although not as heavy on the rock bits as I half-remembered from the film. Fairly rousing in bits (which is what I wanted), but also more suitable for the background (to studying) than I’d feared.

Nice change from LotR and classical greats.

A story about "Essentials magazine" — 21 weeks ago

    WORTH CONSUMING!

One of those three-for-£1 trial offers… that a friend got, then passed the magazines to me!

Despite being hugely lightweight, I was actually more impressed with Essentials than I expected. I’m sick of high-gloss, fashion’n’sex women’s mags. This, though, is more of a young Prima (!). Yes, there’s still several opening pages of fashion – but all from high-street or online stores, at realistic prices! The manditory sob-story article nestles between not just make up tips, but pages of sometimes – shock! – actually useful hints. On… cleaning, mostly! LOL!

A story about "Pop in the Bath" — 22 weeks ago

For something full of orange, lemon, bergamot, and madarin, you could almost miss the hugely subtle scent of this bubble bar, which is my only disappointment. Otherwise, it turned the water a gorgeous almost turquoise-y blue, and made for a relaxing bath. Just, a bit more smell, please!

A story about "Torchwood - The Complete Second Season" — 21 weeks ago

    WORTH CONSUMING!

A definite improvement on the first series, although I couldn’t put my finger on why: I still really disliked pretty much all of the characters, more so in some instances! Not a patch on its ‘parent’ show, anyway.

A story about "The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency" — 22 weeks ago

    WORTH CONSUMING!

I’ve never read any of the books, but when I saw this on TV over Easter, I really fancied seeing it – and I’m glad I did. It’s an odd mix, and a bit difficult to describe. It’s not really drama, ‘cos there’s a lot of very light-hearted moments. It’s not comedy, though – several bits made me smile a great deal, but there’s a lot of darkness here, particularly near the end.

Overall, just… kinda nice. And you don’t get to say that often enough, methinks.

A story about "Redbush rooibos tea" — 21 weeks ago

    WORTH CONSUMING!

    Mma Ramotswe’s favourite :)

I’m not overly concerned about my caffeine intake, but I do like a cuppa when I get home from work – which seemed like a good time to ditch the stimulants, as I was having difficulty sleeping. Alas, this still makes you get up about 2am to pee ;)

Taste-wise it’s just not ‘tea’ as we know it, and even being able to add milk isn’t going to convince you otherwise. However, as a drink in its own right, it’s pretty okay – a somewhat nutty but not herbal (thankfully!) flavour.

If I fancy a ‘proper’ cuppa this stuff doesn’t stand a chance – but I do occasionally fancy this as something a bit different.

Why I recommend "Ashes to Ashes (2008 TV)" — 21 weeks ago

    WORTH CONSUMING!

I really quite enjoyed the quirkiness of Life on Mars, but making a follow-up series, with a new character going back in time, seemed like a huge mistake. In fact, I know at least one person who hated the whole thing from episode 1. Me? Actually, I rather enjoyed it! I thought it would all seem like a huge copy/repeat, but making Alex aware of the original (John Sims) case added a certain something. The relationship between posh ‘Bolly Knickers’ (as DCI Hunt nicknames her straight off!) and the Gene Genie worked pretty well, and I admit laughing at the 1980s came a bit easier for me!

A story about "Healthy Choice spicy lentil and vegetable soup" — 22 weeks ago

    WORTH CONSUMING!

Really, once you’ve started making home-made soups the tinned variety are never quite good enough, but this wasn’t bad! Very mildly spicy, but nice big chunks and the lentils and chickpeas added some extra bulk.

Still a few random tins in the cupboard to use up!
