    A review of "Ender's Game (Ender, Book 1)" — 9 weeks ago

    WORTH CONSUMING!

I’d first read Ender’s Game oh, I don’t know, a long time ago. Years and years. I’d never gone further in the series, but I’d always remembered the first novel fondly. I recently decided to recheck it out and see how my memories compared.
I’d probably slightly idealized the book, but not a lot. The opening hooked me immediately – I really enjoyed the way Card opened – the mystery was just enough to whet my appetite and get me curious.
As the book continued, I was drawn in by the way Card wrote the interactions between the characters and Ender’s thoughts (and Valentine’s) – I liked the way he showed the gifted children as being qualitative different from the way children are usually presented. I can’t say for sure that it’s entirely accurate, but it had the right flavour, and was well done.
The story kept me hooked, and I was sucking the pages down as fast as I can. The nuts and bolts of the battles interested me less than they had when I first read the book, but I was more taken by Ender’s personal challenge.
One downside is that there’s a kind of big surprise near the end of the book, and on rereading the book, that punch was lost. On the other hand, knowing it was coming did allow me to appreciate other facets of the story.
In the end, I’d read a well-told adventure story about a very special child – one that brought me into his heart and mind, really tweaking my empathy.
Highly recommended, even if you’re not usually a Science Fiction buff.

A review of "The Prodigal Tongue: Dispatches from the Future of English" — 10 weeks ago

    WORTH CONSUMING!

An interesting book – I like the discussions of the changes English has undergone and is undergoing and the way it’s affecting other languages. (And all the pop culture references I’m familiar with were fun.)
I especially enjoyed the section on Japan(ese), as I’ve recently returned from there and had been wondering about all the English-derived words that existed, “Really, they had no word for ‘milk’? Or ‘green’?”).
Unfortunately, I didn’t find that the book was formed in such a way as to provide a guided message – it was a little looser, almost (but not quite) an amorphous mass of information about language change. I think a more obvious structure or message would’ve pushed this from a good book to a great one.

A story about "maple walnut fudge ice cream" — 10 weeks ago

    WORTH CONSUMING!

From The Perfect Scoop – maple ice cream with wet walnuts and the chocolate fudge ripple. I think I prefer my maple ice cream unadulterated by fudge ripple, but it’s still decidedly edible, and reviews from family and friends suggest that the fudge did not detract from the end result.

Why it's taking me forever to finish consuming "The Undercover Economist: Exposing Why the Rich Are Rich, the Poor Are Poor--and Why You Can Never Buy a Decent Used Car!" — 16 weeks ago

    WORTH CONSUMING!

For starters, when I added it as “consuming”, AllConsuming assigned a date a week in the past. Very odd. Second, I have to stop reading it and return it to the library while I’m in Japan.

    WORTH CONSUMING!

Very enjoyable. Starts with basic examples explaining how the value of a resource changes depending on the availability of comparable resources and moves on to describe externalities and comparative advantage. I especially enjoyed the sections on US Healthcare and China’s recent growth.
Not the best “economics for laypeople” book I’ve read, as the style wasn’t quite as engaging as that in Freakonimcs, but well worth your time. Then again, maybe I would’ve enjoyed it more if I hadn’t put it down for 3 weeks while on vacation…

A review of "Gardens of the Moon (The Malazan Book of the Fallen, Vol. 1)" — 12 weeks ago

    WORTH CONSUMING!

I guess “amibitious” (stealing from the author’s preface) is accurate, but I’d say the comparisons to Umberto Eco are not warranted. A big(ish) tale, including a large cast of (sometimes poorly-differentiated) characters. I didn’t find the prose to be particularly striking, with a fairly easy vocabulary.
I was disappointed by the confusion introduced by the large number of characters and constant shifting between them. Also, there were a large number of deus ex machina events, many of which weren’t justified, in my opinion.
I think I was also turned off by the range of the characters’ ranks – we have grunts, ordinary citizens, and all the way up to the Empress’s right hand, and I didn’t feel like the way in which these people interacted was realistic.

In spite of all these complaints, there are some interesting ideas, and the story moved quickly for me, so I’m not totally turned off. I’m told later books are better, so I may return. Still, as far as I’m concerned, it doesn’t meet its reputation.
