Sanjuro: "Good swords are kept in their sheaths." — 7 weeks ago

    WORTH CONSUMING!

Getting it right out of the way: Sanjuro is no Yojimbo. But that doesn’t mean that it’s bad. Toshiro Mifune and Akiro Kurosawa bring the nameless samurai back in an adaptation of a Japanese novel about nine young samurai who get in trouble trying to fight corruption in their town. And while the plot is a little simple and the morality a little obvious, it’s great to see Mifune back in the role. His samurai appears to have no scruples but is in fact very honourable; he’s dirty but noble; he’s humourous and yet can switch to deadly serious in an instant. It’s just a great role for him, and he pulls it off magnificently. There are some amazing shots, including the scenes with the flowers flowing down the river, and the fights are always good. But that ending scene…wow. Just a great shock; very powerful. A very good movie, but it suffers when compared to its predecessor.

Heroes Season 2: A Quick and Painless (For Me) Review — 9 weeks ago

Normally I try and analyze why I do and don’t like something, and it takes me a long time to write. But after watching Heroes Season 2, I realize that it’s so disappointing, it would be a huge waste of time to write for a long time on it. So here are my quick and dirty thoughts. (There may be some spoilers that follow, so be prepared.)

First of all: not every story is equal to every other story. I care about Claire but I don’t care about her troubles at school, not compared to what was going on with Peter and Nathan, or Hiro, or Matt Parkman. I would have liked to have seen more of their stories and less of Claire Bennett: troubled cheerleader. They introduced too many new characters, which gave the first half of the season a fractured feel. Two characters in particular didn’t grab my interest at all: I couldn’t have cared less about Maja & Alejandro if I tried. The return of Sylar? Awful. I never liked his character and was hoping we’d be done with him, but here he is again, trying to get his powers back. Ugh. Things picked up with the last three or four episodes, but three or four out of eleven is NOT a good average. By the end I was watching more out of habit than interest. I was never the biggest Heroes fan, but season two nearly snuffed my interest completely. I’ll give the next season a shot, but I’m not very hopeful about it.

Stagecoach: "There are some things a man just can't run away from." — 7 weeks ago

    WORTH CONSUMING!

Stagecoach was a pleasant surprise. I watched it not expecting much other than a starmaking turn from John Wayne, and an example of John Ford’s early Western work. But it’s actually a really good movie. A group of characters get on a stagecoach that’s going through Apache territory, each for their own reasons, and the movie gets a lot of mileage from their interactions. Some of my favourite parts are how John Wayne’s character, the Ringo kid, treats the woman of ill-repute like a genuine lady, and doesn’t understand why the other characters are so cruel to her. It’s no wonder he became a star after this movie: his performance is incredibly endearing. But it’s not all about the interactions: there’s some great camerawork, and Ford really uses the sets to great advantage showing the difference between being “trapped” in the safe indoors and being “free” on the dangerous road. It’s a little hokey, but I would definitely watch it again.

Butterbeer Three Ways — 10 weeks ago

    WORTH CONSUMING!

I’ve come across a few different recipes for Butterbeer, and I like each one a little better than the next. They each share a similar basic premise: one ounce butterscotch schnapps, mixed with five to ten ounces of an additional beverage (depending on how strong you want it). In order of preference, I would recommend:
    1. Beer (it’s okay; not quite as sweet or buttery as I would have liked)
    2. Root Beer (particularly A&W Root Beer, as the flavours really work well together)
    3. Cream Soda (the very best bet)

Consume with a chapter of The Hobbit or one of the Lord of the Rings movies and enjoy!

Jack Daniel's Old No. 7: A Few Quick Thoughts — 10 weeks ago

    WORTH CONSUMING!

I’d never had Jack Daniels before this week, so I tried it a few different ways in order to have some variations helping my judgement.

Overall, it’s is a very mellow tasting whiskey, with a nice smoky flavour and a very mild aftertaste. I think it’s the best on its own, poured over a little ice. As an ingredient for a whiskey sour it is decidedly weak; it doesn’t have enough body to really give the drink much flavour. Mixed with orange juice…well, let’s just say it’s worth trying once.

And Jack & Coke deserves a very special mention. One of my top 3 highballs is Rye & Coke, so I knew I had to try some with JD. At first blush, Jack Daniels and Coca-Cola seem made for each other. When you add, say, Crown Royal to Coke, the two tastes fight with each other for a little bit and then fuse into something more. But Jack & Coke barely put up a fight. They just simply fall into each other’s arms, and the taste is only slightly more than either one by themselves. Which is why, I think, it’s less satisfying.

Overall, I’d get this again and just drink it straight – although I did hear that an ounce of JD in a cup of hot tea is pleasing, so maybe that’s worth a shot.
