A story about "Cat in a Kiwi Con" — 12 weeks ago
The mystery itself was interesting enough, but the wording was bizarre. I prefer writing that is more conversational. This was oddly formal—words that no one ever uses, like ‘thence’.

It’s interesting that the reviews here are rather blah, when the reviews I read on a blog (that inspired me to read the book in the first place) were all saying they were sad to see the book end. I thought it was a wonderful book—basically about the relationships that developed between strangers thrown together in a hostage situation. I could feel the passion about music and song. I was disappointed in the ending, however. I would have preferred the book end several pages earlier—perhaps when they were all cavorting in the grass. Let the reader imagine a future for them.
For someone new to gardening (like me), there are helpful hints and good basic information. Anyone already versed in gardening, however, will find the book too elementary. I liked some of the craft projects. And I really like the website.
Absolutely fantastic! I couldn’t put it down. For the life of me, I can’t fathom why anyone wouldn’t love this. She is forthright, interesting, easy to read, and she genuinely seems like someone I’d like to know. I’m buying another copy of this book to give as a gift, and I’m going to pick up another of Reichl’s books for myself. Shoot, I may even subscribe to Gourmet Magazine.
This should be required reading—it just makes so much sense. And who knew a (for all intents and purposes) medical text could be so incredibly interesting?!
I thought the writing was lovely and conversational. At times I laughed out loud, at times I squirmed in uncomforable recognition. It was journey through physical pleasure, spiritual enlightenment, and self introspection. Some orthodox religious readers may be a bit put off by the eastern philosophies, but try to have an open mind.
I suppose it’s true that the ending was a bit of a let down, but the journey to get there was still well worth the ride. I thought the writing was amazingly descriptive, evocative, intriguing. I think I smiled throughout, as I was taken up in the superstitions, folklore, mysteries. Shields’ words were a web weaving an enchantment, compelling me in.
As far as career counseling goes, face-to-face help is preferable. As far as books go though, this one is as good as you could get. I found it helpful.
I thought it was a magical read. I have a review on my blog

I thought the tale itself was well written, but the subject was just too sad—both the state of the old man, and the horrors of the circus. I didn’t find it worthwhile reading material, and I’m surprised it has been so well received by critics.
