Commentary on the Typical 50's Home Life — 2 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

Aside from its spectacular beauty, this movie had a lot of valuable things to say.

The sickening normality of American home life in the 50’s in successfully contrasted with the succession of taboo problems that complicate the lives of the characters. It makes for an extremely interesting plot.

The picture-perfect 50’s housewife is thrown into a spiral of choas that changes her way of looking at the world. The woman discovers her husband is cheating on her…with a man. She then falls in love with her black gardener, which sends even more rumors flying about.

Most, if not all of the performances in this film are well-done (even Dennis Quaid managed to be decent for once).

This film may be slightly languid, but the lack of speed matches the subject and still manages to be interesting.

A story about "Come Now Sleep" — 2 years ago

Though I have only listened to a song or two thus far, I can’t help but find their songs unpleasant. Not the lyrics or anything, I’m just not much for their sound as a whole thus far.

A New Kind of Musical Journey — 2 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

This is definately something you don’t hear everyday. The broad experimentation with the instrumentals is something I haven’t heard since my encounter with the wonderful Bjork. As if that wasn’t enough there was insightful, creative lyrics to go along with it.

This is definately music that grows on you and that you have to listen to more than once to appreciate. Blame the creativity for that one.

It also helped that I knew what they were talking about when they titled the song “Loch Raven.” Gave me a kick.

My favorite tracks had to be “Turn into something”, “Did you see the words?”, and “Flesh Canoe”

Definately Wasn't A Fan of the Whole Album — 2 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

Many of the tracks sounded very similar to me and began melding together. I did greatly enjoy the tracks Lips of an Angel, Better than Me, and Bliss.

What Sromkie Said! — 2 years ago

NOT WORTH CONSUMING

Sromkie’s review hit the nail on the head. Mine is the extensive, ranty version (with a few things thrown in.)

Very few songs stood out on this album. I spent my preteen years listening to Avril’s first album and I still can appreciate some of the songs today (considering how old she was at the time, considering how old I was at the time.) But her work hasn’t matured at all.

If anything it’s all her old stuff with a bitchy tone. Many of the songs were just her boosting her own ego. Avril’s 23 (or was when the album came out,) married, and still making the songs of a 16 year old pop star. Hell, I’m 16 and I wouldn’t write songs like this!

Though her lyrics have never been her strong point, I literally laugh out loud at the lyrics of “I Don’t Have to Try.” It has to be one of the worst examples of songwriting I have ever seen. There is no redeeming the line “I’m the one that wears the pants.”

Girlfriend is the most overrated song of the year (don’t even get me started on that.) I think that is the only reason why this album sold.

The only reason I might give it a Worth Consuming: There were two songs that made listening to this rather terrible album worth it. “Contagious” (still in the teen tradition, but I enjoyed it) and “When You’re Gone.”

Pass this one up folks and save your money. Download “Contagious” and “When You’re Gone” on itunes.

Why it's taking me forever to finish consuming "All the King's Men (Special Edition)" — 2 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

I keep having to rewind it. Their accents are far too over the top. I can’t understand a word sometimes.

A story about "Oscar's Black Odyssey" — 2 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

The idea that Sidney didn’t win an academy award for his performance as Virgil Tibbs in In The Heat of the Night is surprising to say the least. He gave such a powerful performance, one of the most powerful I’ve ever seen. I damn the academy for not putting him on the ballot.

Not My Kind of Movie — 2 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

I simply don’t like these kind of movies in comparison to many other types. They’re slow-moving but the images that could make a leisurely film interesting simply aren’t there. Still, it’s entertaining enough and the acting is terrific. Then again, it’s difficult to go wrong in that department when you have such a superb cast.

It was incredibly predictable but good to watch if nothing else is on.

A Wet Dream For Those With A Shaving Fetish — 2 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

If you don’t know why this movie is called fur (and know nothing of Diane’s work,) you will soon have the reasons thrown in your face!

The acting is a bit dramatic and overwrought, but eventually it melded with the fantastical cinematography to simply become a part of the movie for me.

Somehow they managed to make the shaving scene very beautiful. When he is revealed without all his fur one has to think of it as a rebirth for him, emotionally as well as physically.

This is an incredibly erotic film. They manage to make the best of it without really overstepping themselves. For once, I am happy to see a movie that uses sex scenes to develop the realtionships between the characters. They’re shown through the characters emotions, the manner in which they do it, and the cinematography itself. The sex between Diane and her husband was shown as rough, with almost vulgar camera angles while the love scene between Diane and Lionel was gentle, and made into a scene blooming with color.

Though what was happening to him was terrible one really can’t help but dislike Allan Arbus. I might have managed to give him the sympathey that was due had he fought for her at all. She got up in the middle of the night, while he was awake, and she went to Lionel. He knew she was going to Lionel. And he didn’t say a word. It also doesn’t help that despite the irrationality of it all, I found myself rooting for Lionel and Diane.

This film certainly isn’t for everyone. I frequently found myself a bit turned off by its nonsensical surealness but the emotional changes of the characters always pulled me back in.

I Hated the Ending — 2 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

I despised the main character. Jack should have stabbed her, she was an idiot =D
