Too Intangible — 1 year ago

NOT WORTH CONSUMING

The trailers for this film were well-done. It was because of those trailers that I decided to read the book, which was, in short, a fantastic and interesting read.

Suskind’s prose are beautiful, and the visuals of the film definately reflect them. However, the story itself was far too intangible to be adapted into a decent movie. Most of the movie consisted of the main character running about sniffing the air. We could not tell what was going on in his mind, which took out much of the story. Without the aid of Suskind’s writing the story seemed outlandish (which it is, but Suskind managed to suspend disbelief in the book, while the movie fails to do so.)

Another thing that bothered me: Why did they feel the need to cast a very attractive actor for the role of Jean-Baptise? The point of his character is to be repulsive, a cockroach, the most reproachable person of mankind who dies in an ironic fashion. He hates the world and they hate him. In the book his horrid appearence allowed the world to hate him more. This dark teenager with the doe-like blue eyes is hardly destestable.

Good cast (excluding the main character), good cinematography, but no suspension of belief. For me, this film was an incredible disappointment.

Quirky — 1 year ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

The trailer was much funnier than the actual movie, so I was pretty disappointed. Too much pointless dialogue for the first hour of the film. I enjoyed the scenes where they sweded the films but other than that I could have gone without seeing it. Once again, Gondry disappoints after the spectacular creation of Eternal Sunshine. Artistically Gondry (hand-cut crafty), quirky story, good acting. But it still didn’t feel quite right.

Original, but... — 1 year ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

I think this movie was a little confused about what it wanted to be. The story was a little high brow for kids. However, the acting was patened kid’s movie. The script had it’s weak points as well. Maybe if the acting and script had been upgraded a bit I would have enjoyed this movie much more.

Good Concept... — 1 year ago

NOT WORTH CONSUMING

But shitty acting and the cameras are totally screwed up. The shakey, blurry camera ruined the movie for me, gave me a massive headache.

But a pretty cute chick flick with some dumb humor here and there.

Flat Ending — 1 year ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

I enjoyed this film up until the end. They should have cut it off at the scene where he went to visit the Blue Fairy. The whole alien deal seemed far too random and not suitable for the movie.

Second Worst Movie I've Ever Seen in the Theater — 1 year ago

NOT WORTH CONSUMING

I walked out. Though I never walk out of movies, I was with two people. One on my left who despised the movie, and the one on the right who had already seen it and loved it. I was the one to decide whether we stayed or not. Truthfully, I could stand sitting through it, but I had just had coffee, I was really fridgety, and I’d rather be home watching MST3K with my boyfriend than being in the theater sitting through a movie I didn’t like.

WIthin the first half-an-hour, it became pretty obvious that this was a film made for violence. However, I still found the plot pretty intriguing (though unoriginal) and wanted to see what the twist was on the survivors. I was sorely disappointed. When I found out that 30 years had produced a cannibalistic Hell’s Angels with blunt weapons, and I was presented with a 15 minute action sequence that produced no emotion from me oncesoever, I knew that I wouldn’t want to see the rest of it. Ripoff plot, bad acting, and gore for gore.

A Myraid of Complaints — 1 year ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

This movie had so much potential. The plot was extremely intriguing. However, it ultimately fell flat on its face.

The characters were my first complaint. They were cold, unrealteable, and flat. They could all be summed up in three bullet points. Even Cillian’s character was just solitary, in love with his creation, and had a sister. The one character I had budding affection for was the Captain, who was the first to be killed off.

The cinematography was spectacular. I would have loved to see it on the big screen. I didn’t understand the change in style near the end, where an elegant science fiction film transformed into a cheap cross between a slasher film and a monster movie.

I started disliking this movie after they engaged with Icarus I and were being killed off. The captain of Icarus I’s motive was explained, but ultimately he too was flat. The blur they put on him combined with the deep fried skin dehumanized him, making him seem more like a monster than a man.

Because of the flatness of the characters, I didn’t care if they died. If I had given a shit about the characters that might have compensated for the sudden switch in mood at the end. To me the whole ending seemed random, like it was from another movie entirely. I found myself just wanting the film to be over when the payload was falling to the sun, and Cillian was trying to escape from the crisped captain. My boyfriend and I ended up singing a song about the eternal plundge. In other words, no suspense was created there, just boredom.

The only reason I gave this movie a worth consuming is because it was pretty and because the plot had a great deal of potential had they done it correctly. It was definately disappointing.

Just One Question... — 2 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

I read the story before I found out this was coming out at all. But I was still left with this question: What the hell was with the ending?

The Magic of Afronosky Lives — 2 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

Yet another masterpiece created by the hands of the divine Afronosky. This was the only work of his I hadn’t seen and now that I have, I am nothing short of fulfilled.

Story aside for the moment, this film is a piece of cinematic genius. The editing must of taken a fantastic amount of time and it very obviously paid off. His finger-snap-speed scene transitions are enough to enduce an epileptic seizure (also scene in the opening of Pi) but properly convey the mass choas, euphoria, and utter loss of control associated with addiction. The score is, of course, amazing and only enhancing the wonderful direction. In short, it was perfection.

As for the plot line and the characters, they were realistic, amazing, and totally heartbreaking. Having my own personal connections with addiction, I found this film to be not only a wonder to view but surprisingly emotional. The things may family has gone through in relation to addiction, especially drug addiction, is all in that film emotionally. That and more.

I spent a solid half an hour sobbing when the credits started rolling. This isn’t counting the tears that began to appear during that montage where their lives have finally spun out of control…then the aftermath.

Though dramatic, it’s not too far from the truth, and that is what makes it so incredible. That is what makes it an expierence.

If you’ve ever thought about using drugs, watch this movie. Unless you are a souless masochist, your desire will be knocked down many notches if not eliminated entirely.
