Timequake by Vonnegut — 2 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

Mr. Vonnegut declares that the original novel Timequake was horrible and so he threw the whole thing out and basically ruminates on his life and writing occasionally talking about things from the original novel, but often just describing things that he said to people or people said to him.

I guess it reads a little like an old man talking at you about the way things used to be. That would be unpleasant, normally, but I loved it anyway.

This book reads like something Kurt Vonnegut might have written in the afterlife and then faxed it to us posthumously.

WORTH CONSUMING!

I read this as part of a three book set combined in one volume. I felt like it was the best of the three. I appreciated the idea of helping kids by discovery and example as opposed to just giving the kid some kind of magic pill that “cures” him or her of their embarrassing character flaw.

Magic or prescriptions? — 2 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle books are pretty fun to read. I really enjoy the obsolete vernacular and archaic humor. The only disturbing thing about this particular book is Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle’s tendency to provide various pills, potions and powders to magically cure children of the character flaws. I realize at that time, about the only pills you might give to a child was aspirin. Now we have pills to replace parenting and they are terribly overused. I don’t really blame Betty MacDonald for writing it this way, but the story about the “Leadership Pills” had me cringing. Anyway, it’s pretty fun.

WORTH CONSUMING!

It’s a pretty fun kids book. Lots of interesting pictures from lots of different artists and writers. Definitely worth checking out from the library if you like kids books or indie comic books or art.

Meh... — 2 years ago

Granted, I’m perhaps not the best person to review this. I knew when I checked this out from the library that I’d probably think it was cheesy and I was right.

It’s full of platitudes. The dialog is like a really bad B-movie. In one scene, Captain American tortures a terrorist to get him to talk. Now this was written in 1997, long before we embarrassed ourselves with the whole torturing prisoners thing, but it kind of gave me a sick feeling seeing a superhero even more goody-goody than Superman shove someone into a tar pit until he agreed to spill the beans.

Except for all that, it was fun to read, I guess. Classic comic book fare.

A review of "Lamb: The Gospel According to Biff, Christ's Childhood Pal" — 2 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

I really enjoyed this book and laughed quite frequently while reading it. I suppose there was a corny joke here and there, but it was more than fun enough to make up for it.

Before I began to read this book, I thought I would be warning the very religious away from this book when I would finally write the review. Even the author said he believed the very religious would probably hate his book. Honestly, I don’t see it. I can see how people who practice Hinduism or Judaism might be offended at some of the ways their religion has been portrayed, but I really don’t see anything that should be (too terribly) offensive to Christians. Yes, the book is very funny and yes, Jesus is one of the main characters (except he’s called Joshua here.) But really, the story is told respectfully and above all, it’s funny.

Anyway, read it if you have a sense of humor.

A review of "Spiral by Koji Suzuki" — 2 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

This is an entirely different story from the events of the Ring movies, which I think is the main reason I like this better than Ring. I never really knew how it was all going to turn out, so that made it a lot more fun.

Still not as scary as the movies, but this one is scarier than the first one.

An easy read — 2 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

I enjoyed this book quite a bit. Wicked was my favorite and this had some of the oddness to it that I enjoyed from that earlier work.

I read this one pretty quickly which tells me that it held my attention better than most books do. I’m going to try and say this without spoiling it, but I did not really like the vague and offhand way he ended this book, or really most of his books. It’s as if he writes a complete ending then cuts it out at the point where he can say to himself, “well, they get the idea.” I don’t know, I kind of like to have the ending spelled out for me…just a personal preference.

Anyway, a very fun read if you like the journey more than the destination.

My favorite Final Fantasy — 2 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

I suppose many people are turned off by the somewhat whimsical graphics and story, but for me it’s far and away the best Final Fantasy I’ve played (which is only 1, 7, 9 and 10.)

I notice that, as of this writing, the lone “Not worth consuming” comes from a guy. This game does have a reputation as a “girl’s game” whatever that really means. I prefer a story with a little humor to all the death and drama of Final Fantasies 7 and 10. I still enjoyed those, but there is something rather nice about the simplicity of the story in this one.

Anyway, if you are trying to decide whether you might like it, if you have played and enjoyed “Radiata Stories”, “The Legend of Zelda: Windwaker,” or “Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles” I think you would like this one. If you like your RPGs to be dark and depressing, then you won’t like this one much at all.
