Depressing as hell — 2 years ago

NOT WORTH CONSUMING

Maybe I just wasn’t in the mood for this but God, it was depressing. The synopsis on the back didn’t really set you up for the storyline and I didn’t really enjoy it once I got into it.

Give it a go though, it’s an easy read it just didn’t do it for me.

WORTH CONSUMING!

I gave this a go to see what all the hype was about and why people (teenagers AND adults) are so obsessed with the story.

It was an OK book I suppose and if I’m honest I probably would have lapped it up when I was about 15/16 which is pretty much the target market. However I’m a good decade (or so) beyond that so can only give it an ‘OK’ but I guess I can see what’s so appealing about it, vampire stories will ALWAYS be popular, especially if you throw it at hormonal teenagers.

In relation to other reviews about the style of the writing I actually welcomed the simple style. It was a nice break from some of the try hard writing you can see, overloaded with meaning and missing the point which is to tell a good story.

Meh... — 4 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

This took some getting into I must admit. However as I got to know each character I started to enjoy it more. It was never as ‘engrossing’ as the book jacket informed me it would be but it was OK and I did end up putting off a few things to get the last few chapters read. I’m getting into historical fiction at the moment so if you like the genre it will probably appeal but if not then it’s probably not gonna work for you!

A review of "Wasting Police Time" — 4 years ago

NOT WORTH CONSUMING

I agree with a a lot of what he says but think it’s written in such a way that annoyed me in only the way a copy of the Daily Mail can.

I bet he’s a reader.

His single minded and completely unbalanced view undermines the good messages he is trying to get across. Yes we should have more coppers on the beat and yes the paperwork they are expected to do is ridiculous but there are more areas that need to be policed than just burglars and drug addicts. Some even need skills that your average PC might not have – fancy that.

Potentially a good book. But it’s not.

A review of "The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas" — 4 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

This was a fantastic little book with a lot to say. The style of writing from a perspective of a nine year old boy worked with this length of book (just over 200 pages) Any more would have been irritating but this was just enough to get the story across effectively ad to leave you frantically reading the last ten pages wanting to shout at the main character exactly what is going on! (maybe that’s just me!0

I can’t recommend this enough!

WORTH CONSUMING!

I cried too, much to the amusement of my boyfriend. I agree with the first section dragging slightly up until the arrival of Robbie at the house but it all fits in perfectly once you’re finished (if that makes sense!)

Such a good read and I’m glad I read it before I see the film!! One I’ll probably reread again at some point.

Why I recommend "On Writing" — 5 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

This is about the 3rd or 4th time I have read this book and it always fills me with motivation and inspiration for writing. I love the bit where ‘Carrie’ is sold for hundreds of thousands of dollars – very uplifting.

King’s enthusiasm for his craft is infectious and the section on his life and what inspired/inspires him to write are also very interesting. One I will re-read at many points in my life I’m sure. Worth a read!!

A review of "We Need to Talk About Kevin: A Novel (P.S.)" — 5 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

This book raised so many questions. As someone without children yet it really made me think ‘what if…?’

I struggled to get into it but ended up not being able to put it dwn in the last 100 pages. Definitley worth a read.

Ultra lite reading for rainy afternoons — 5 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

My title says it all. Read it in a day. Instantly forgettable but enjoyable at the time. It hasn’t and won’t change my life but it kept me occupied for a few hours and gave some light relief from some of the more depressing tomes I’ve been reading of late!!
