A story about "Beyond Beats and Rhymes: A Hip-Hop Head Weighs in on Manhood in Hip-Hop Culture"

Beyond Beats and Rhymes: A Hip-Hop Head Weighs in on Manhood in Hip-Hop Culture

by Byron Hurt

It was a pretty insightful film. It was innovative, in that Byron Hunt actually turned these questions (which are not new by any means in the academic world) on the performers and owners of record labels themselves. I think the film will be useful in beginning dialogue. I don’t think it is necessarily groundbreaking, but I think it is an important beginning point to further discuss the issues brought up in the film. Hunt’s film looked at Machismo, Misogyny, and Homophobia in hip-hop. It was interesting to hear the perspectives of many of today’s most popular rap performers. It would’ve strengthened the documentary to have more opinions from more artists. He interviewed Jadakiss, Talib Kweli, Mos Def, Busta Rhymes, Chuck D, and some other industry professionals. However, this group is hardly representative of modern hip-hop culture (not that they aren’t a
representation. All of these artists have been successful and had long careers). The interviews with those waiting to get into the rap game were some of the most insightful interviews of the documentary. Hearing what the young emcee’s felt they had to say and the image they had to portray to ever make it in the rap game was especially informative. Comments made by social critics and professor’s were very thought provoking, but once again, I was personally more interested in hearing what the people who are actually perpetuating these stereotypes have to say. Nonetheless, it was an entertaining and important documentary that will hopefully spark more dialogue and discussion concerning the implications in the film. The issues highlighted are undoubtedly major concerns, not only for hip-hop, but for American society as a whole.

Why I recommend "The Adventures of Prince Achmed"

The Adventures of Prince Achmed

by Carl Koch

This film is incredible! Considered as the first full-length animated film, Reiniger’s silhouette film is a beautiful testament to the meticulous processes now largely ignored through the ease of technology. This film, accompanied by a hypnotic score by Wolfgang Zeller, plays out like a ballet, each silhouette moving in harmony with the other, fluidly covering the small tinted canvas with an exactness that is awe-inspiring. This film is reminiscent of the early nickelodeons :: an experience that gives you the sense of peering into a magical world, especially designed for you. The craft that went into this film cannot be ignored because, in many ways, it’s what creates the sense of wonder. Similar to the feeling a child (or adult for that matter) feels when holding a music box, this movie, through its craft and execution, places a little bit of mystery in your hands and invites you to partake in a mesmerizing journey that highlights the incredible creativity of its author.

A story about "An Inconvenient Truth"

An Inconvenient Truth

by Davis Guggenheim

I watched this movie and I really enjoyed it. As a response to the previous comment, I would say that even if it was a political move on Al Gore’s part, many of the points brought up in his presentation are valid. I’ve heard many people attack the movie by attacking Al Gore (ad hominem fallacy, attack the person not the ideas). However, I think the concerns are what are truly important to take away from your experience of watching this film. We can only hope that he practices what he preaches. Nonetheless, we still have a responsibility to act and create change in areas we feel are important enough and require change. I enjoyed the movie because it gave me the desire to look further into this crisis, and try to do what I can to at least create change in my daily practices.
