A story about "Manga: The Complete Guide" — 1 year ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

This was a fun read. I have a few disagreements on their ratings of particular manga—some seemed to be more based on personal tastes than actual merit; but I agreed for the most part. I guess it was interesting to read in the sense that it was complete…and if you discount the ‘Adult’ series; I own 95% of the manga they reviewed. Heh. There are actually a few series that I REALLY didn’t want to read (like sugar sugar rune); but thanks to the reviews in this book, I’ll be checking them out in the near future.

And, for those of you new to manga or those attempting to expand your manga reading repertoire…this is a worthy companion.

Why, Oh why, didn’t “I” write this book??

The ending requires speed reading! — 1 year ago

NOT WORTH CONSUMING

I had higher hopes for this series. The story was interesting, and just as we were beginning to learn about the characters…it ended. It happened so quickly that I didn’t realize this was the last book until I read the author’s comments at the end.

This will definitely require a re-read; so I can piece together the conclusion. I can’t criticize too much because I don’t know the circumstances behind making this a two volume series… but I will say I am a bit disappointed.

I went from hating the first volume of this story to actually enjoying it in volume 4! I’m impressed—my opinions usually don’t change very often!

She likes to write about herself! — 1 year ago

I’ve had this book for over two years, and I think yesturday is the first time I’ve read it. Weird!

The story is nice, and definitely keeps the pace of a Honda Keiko manga. The art is airy & beautiful. The only problem again lies with the translation (I think). There are some major gender reversal moments; which I understand being a problem translating from Japanese (as it doesn’t always have equivalents).

Also, the moment that Key remembers herself I get kind of lost. I don’t know if the nuances are just lost in English or if I was just too tired; but I don’t remember there being anything in her past that would affect her ‘love interest’ so much. Was she some horrible person in her past? Or was it because she was in love with someone else? I don’t know…

NOT WORTH CONSUMING

I tried to give the second volume a chance…because the first was just so bad… but realistically I should have just known better and left it on the shelf. Well, at least this is the last volume in the series (I hope).

A story about "Go Go Heaven!: Volume 1 (Go Go Heaven)" — 1 year ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

It starts out slow…and is a bit confusing; but if you stick it out—it is really worth your while. Go Go Heaven is supposed to be a comedy, but seems like it has some nice elements of drama as well. I liked it. Although, I do prefer Keiko Yamada’s other series “Vs. (or versus)” a bit more.

WORTH CONSUMING!

My Christmas revolves around this movie. Its been a family tradition to watch this movie every year since its release in 1951. We begin our season watching Miracle on 34th Street on the American Thanksgiving (odd for a Canadian…I know), and end the season with Scrooge. Its so fabulous I can barely begin to explain!

It is by far the BEST adaptation of Dicken’s Christmas Carol I have ever seen (although Bugs Bunny is a close second…heh!). Alistair Sim is positively brilliant in the role.

One word of caution to you though. I’d avoid watching the colourized version, unless it is being shown on TV. It appears to have been colourized for television broadcast only, so you will find on your DVD that there are odd pauses. Go and get yourself a beautiful Black & White—as God intended! (heh)

I hated it as a child, but now as an adult, I find I like this movie more and more and more. Every year I get something different out of it.

Its Wonderful!
