A story about "Colored People" — 5 years ago

Nikki Giovanni, my favourite poet, wrote a poem that dismisses the notion that “Childhood remembrances are always a drag if you’re black…” What I like about Gates’ book is that he too, disabuses the reader of that notion. He writes about his childhood (in a mill town in Piedmont, West Virginia) with nostalgia, affection and humour. A highly enjoyable memoir.

A story about "On Writing" — 5 years ago

I really enjoyed this book. A treatise on writing and a memoir all in one. I liked it.

A story about "Second Nature" — 5 years ago

Stephen is the Wolfman, a young man raised by wolves who is taken to a psychiatric facility for treatment after two hunters find him in a trap one winter. He resists all efforts to train him for integration into human society, until he meets Robin, the sister of the psychiatrist who’s been working with Stephen. She (rather implausibly) rescues him from the facility where he was about to be locked away for life, and takes him home with her, where he adapts to the human lifestyle remarkably quickly. They fall in love and Stephen is torn between their relationship and his desire to return to the wild, until a violent murder forces him to make the choice.

A story about "Small Gods" — 5 years ago

Not as instantly readable as “Pyramids”, but still good. More food for thought than “Pyramids”, for sure.

A story about "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass" — 5 years ago

One of my childhood favourites. “The Walrus and the Carpenter” was the first poem I ever memorised of my own free will.

I’d forgotten how much fun this book is to read. And a lot of the puns and wordplay that I picked up on this time would have passed right over my head last time I read this. I’m glad I read it again.

A story about "Hogfather" — 5 years ago

Funny and thought-provoking. And it made me want to give Death a great big hug. Good book.

A story about "Feminist Thought: A More Comprehensive Introduction" — 5 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

I’m actually reading the first edition of this book—“A Comprehensive Introduction” rather than “A More Comprehensive Introduction”. When I borrowed it from the library I didn’t think that I would actually find it interesting, but it’s fascinating reading, and so far seems like a good introduction to the basics of the different schools of feminist thought. The only flaw I’d find in the first edition is that Tong didn’t talk about feminism and race or about multicultural feminism. Hopefully that omission is addressed in the More Comprehensive Introduction. That would definitely be a book that I’d buy.

A story about "The Great Divorce" — 5 years ago

Well, okay. Can’t think of much else to say about this one. I like the Narnia books better. Need to re-read those.
