A story about "Year of Wonders" — 2 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

I was a bit let down with my preconceived notions on this book. I couldn’t get a good feel for the author – I felt the story was very bland and I couldn’t really connect with the main character too much. I felt like the author could have done more character development than she did.

I expected this to be interesting, but found it rather more depressing than I thought it would be.

The tone was very monotonous all the way through. And as some have mentioned, the ending was so odd and out of place; it wasn’t really necessary.

A story about "Wideacre : A Novel" — 2 years ago

The beginning and middle is okay, but the ending is anticlimatic and predictable. The author foreshadowed the ending all throughout the last part of the book so it’s kind of a let down.

The 2nd book is better. I’m on the 3rd book now.

Why I recommend "Memoirs of a Geisha" — 2 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

Wow. That sums up this book. It’s an easy read, nicely written and tells an amazing story about a fictional geisha living in Gion during the depression and WWII.

It’s so worth reading. I’m almost sad that I’m finished and don’t have any more of it to read.

Stranger than Fiction — 2 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

I really liked this. You don’t laugh a lot or cry, but it still holds your attention. The humor is a bit dry, but this movie still sucked me in. You don’t expect Will Ferrell to be believeable in a drama, but it works. The supporting cast is great as well; Dustin Hoffman, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Queen Latifah, and of course Emma Thompson.

I really liked this for its originality and is a pretty likeable “sleeper” movie. The ending is kind of predictable, but you forgive it because it fits.

This reminded me of The Royal Tenenbaums.

WORTH CONSUMING!

Even though I didn’t think I would, I really liked this book. It went quickly and having pictures of what was described was very handy and a nice reference.

I hear “Angels and Demons” is better, though.

A review of "Perfume" — 2 years ago

Very original, but I didn’t like it overall. I didn’t mind the darkness, but I felt this book could have been so much more. I didn’t like the feeling of being in this wacko’s head and I felt the author was overly descriptive of scent. I know that was the premise, but I felt it was overboard. It ended very strangely as well.

This book disturbed me.

The Lady and the Unicorn — 2 years ago

This was just alright. I really like the way Tracey Chevalier weaves stories from items that exist, as I read “The Girl With a Pearl Earring” in the past and enjoyed it. This book was okay, but I felt like it left a lot missing.

I would suggest reading “The Other Boleyn Girl” by Philippa Gregory instead. It’s longer, has an interesting story and is from the same time period as this book (early 1500’s).

NOT WORTH CONSUMING

Could not even finish this book. I gave it about 220 pages and I had to stop. Way too drawn out and getting nowhere by halfway in. The characters are ALL annoying and the plot is very contrived and predictable.

A story about "Jane Eyre (Masterpiece Theatre)" — 2 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

The newest PBS adaptation of Jane Eyre was the best I’ve seen. I’m contemplating buying it on DVD. I really liked Ruth Wilson (a newcomer) and Toby Stevens as the main characters. This is my favorite version by far. This even inspires me to read the book once and for all!
