Why I recommend "Manor House" — 3 years ago
Ok, so, I’m a huge fan of the PBS “House” series. I haven’t seen all of them – though they are on hold from the Library. I love watching these shows and seeing the clothing, food, and living conditions. It always amazes me – and each time I want to be a part of the next one. It reminds me of when I was 13 and worked at Conner Prarie – an 1800’s village in Indy – for a day or two in the summer – it was a day camp thing. We dressed in 1840’s clothing, churned butter and spent the day cooking and cleaning in the houses. I loved it!!
My favorite is Frontier House. I love when the young guy buys his soon-to-be wife a white wedding gown, and she was all sad because “it wasn’t customary in those days to wear white”... that makes me cry everytime.
I’m also a big fan of Regency House Party – now, that’s a reality dating show I can watch. Ha!
As for Manor House, it is about the life of a family and their servants in Edwardian England. All the rules and restrictions that the servants follow seem so strange to most modern people, unfortunately I watch too many period pieces, so it all seems completely normal to me. The family lives a life of leisure, doing nothing all day but hunting and planning parties and changing clothes. Part of me thinks that this would be amazingly fun, but then I might bet terribly bored. As for the staff, they spend all their time working, but the relationships between them are great – you can really see the friendships starting between the “help”, and I love that. It seems so close and fun – but then again, it’s a lot of work and long hours – plus very few baths.
I spent my Saturday watching this – the joys of being lazy!! I didn’t change out of my pajamas, I drank hot tea, and stayed in my bed all day watching Manor House.
My recommendation: If it is a chilly, grey, rainy day and you want something to watch – this is perfect.
