A story about "Flawless Consulting: A Guide to Getting Your Expertise Used" — 6 years ago

Peter Block provides a well-structured book, taking you through the culture and mindset of consulting. He uses a scenario approach to make his points, and provides a variety of check-off lists and tools. He spends a good number of pages on contracting (very important) and on the 50/50 split in client/consultant responsibility that is required for success. Along the way are lots of good tips for how to handle project meetings, work corporate politics, etc.

A story about "The Tipping Point: How Little Things Can Make a Big Difference" — 6 years ago

Interesting take on how small groups emerge as control points for major change.

A story about "Critical Chain" — 6 years ago

Excellent book on project management, problem solving, and managing the multi-project environment. Another in the Theory of Constraints series and, like its counterparts, its message is readable by generalists and specialists alike. I have given copies of this to all my friends in the software development arena.

A story about "Wellsprings of Knowledge" — 6 years ago

This is an inquiry into the nature of innovation - it’s origins and effects, and the rules by which it may be enhanced or diminshed. The author’s emphasis is on the presence of innovation as a quality of a system of managerial methods and attitudes, particularly as pertains to the interaction of people and technology. The author posits that innovation is a thoughtful, repeateable process - not a lucky strike or moment of brief good fortune.

A story about "The Mystery of the Aleph: Mathematics, the Kabbalah, and the Search for Infinity" — 6 years ago

History as a novel - the story of Georg Cantor, one of the inventors of the mathematical theory of infinity. Told from the Jewish perspective, with overtones of Jewish mysticism and historical context. The stories of world-class mathematicians are filled with intrigue and bizzare events. One of my favorite books - both entertaining and informative.

A story about "The Alchemist: A Fable About Following Your Dream" — 6 years ago

This is the first of Coelho’s work I have read. It’s a light, simple story that draws on timeless mysticism and simple truths. It is indeed a fable—entertaining and harmless with a moral at the end.

A story about "The Alchemist: A Fable About Following Your Dream" — 6 years ago

Just checked this book out at the library. Matt Mower recommended I read some of Paolo Coelho’s work.

A story about "Small Pieces Loosely Joined: A Unified Theory of the Web" — 6 years ago

I scanned this in the bookstore in about 20 minutes. I like Weinberger, but this is really just a rehash of his essays and contains little (no?) new material. If you’re keeping up with current trends in social networks and the growth of the web a 20-minute scan in the bookstore is all this book needs.

A story about "The Cluetrain Manifesto: The End of Business as Usual" — 6 years ago

More manifesto than book. Enjoyable but not deep reading. If you don’t own it don’t buy it—pick it up at the library, read it online, download it, or scan it at used bookstore.
