A story about "Borkmann's Point: An Inspector Van Veeteren Mystery" — 2 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

This is the first of Nesser’s books to be translated into English and he joins Henning Mankell as a premier Swedish thriller/mystery writer. I think this is the eighth of the Van Veeteren mysteries and I have the last one, but in German. Needless to say, I’ll wait for more before I read that one.

WORTH CONSUMING!

This film is truer to the book than many others are. Good book – good film.

WORTH CONSUMING!

This book was such a comfort to me when I was an adolescent. I was a member of the “out crowd” as are these three girls. Finally some teenage protagonists I could identify with!

NOT WORTH CONSUMING

Oy the tedium. Go ahead and make your split second decision but make sure you’ve taken pains to eliminate the possibility of prejudice. Did I miss anything? Where was the Reader’s Digest Condensed Book when I needed it? It took me weeks to get through this book. it’ll have to be a cold day in you know where before I pick up The Tipping Point.

Why I recommend "Hollywoodland (Full-Screen Edition)" — 2 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

Nice to see Ben Affleck on a career upswing. I don’t always care for film noir but I did like this one. With regard to the George Reeves Superman, I suppose you have to be a certain age to appreciate him. He really did have small parts in Gone with the Wind and From Here to Eternity. A perceptive view of Hollywood’s underbelly.

WORTH CONSUMING!

This book is a “wow”! Though written in the 50’s it could have been published recently. The characters are well drawn and the plot is excellent. I never guessed….

WORTH CONSUMING!

Tremendous book which I read several years after seeing the movie. It’s in the same vein as Paul Theroux’s Mosquito Coast. Highly recommend.

How "Mariette In Ecstasy" changed my life — 2 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

Supposedly this book was a surprise national bestseller in 1991. Where are all the people who have read it? These are possibly the most beautiful words, short of poetry, that I have ever read. And it is comforting to think that even in such a secular world as ours people are still willing to write and read a book that deals with questions of faith and doubt, ecstasy and chicanery, conviction and self delusion. A number of the reviews at Amazon comment that the author takes no sides or that the book leaves more questions than it answers. I found more answers than questions and for that I am extremely greatful.

A story about "Broken Flowers" — 2 years ago

Warning – This is one depressing movie. A little like Michael Caine’s Alfie which I found much more poignant than this.
