A story about "A Patchwork Planet (Ballantine Reader's Circle)" — 49 weeks ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

This is the first Anne Tyler I’ve read in several years and I’m glad I did. What I like about her books is that she always manages to create empathy for her main character. No matter their “social status” they are good people muddling through. And the endings are satisfying.

WORTH CONSUMING!

This was one of the most horrifying films I’ve seen.

A story about "Stones for Ibarra (Contemporary American Fiction)" — 1 year ago

I persisted in reading this book because I knew it had won a book prize. I saw great merit in parts of it but found other parts tedious.

A story about "Call It Sleep" — 1 year ago

I’m not sure why there have been so many raves about this book. Can anyone enlighten me? When it comes to tenement living I’d take A Tree Grows in Brooklyn anyday and for immigrant life, albeit on the prairie, I prefer Giants in the Earth. There seems to be a lot of sexual content in this book, much more than I’d expect the average 8 yr. old at the turn of the 19th century to be aware of, or is it the old Freudian Oedipus complex?

This was enjoyable but I feel the first two books in the series are stronger.

WORTH CONSUMING!

This is a beautiful but heart breaking film. Bring tissues.

NOT WORTH CONSUMING

I tried, I really did, but after 200+ pages there was just too much science/description and not enough fiction/story. Nor was I interested in the contorted sex lives/fantasies of the characters. I know it’s won prizes but why do so many authors think they have to write 600 page books?

A story about "Devil Bones: A Novel" — 1 year ago

If you’ve read Temperance Brennan books before this one starts with a lot of tedious back story. Please Ms. Reichs, next time cut to the chase. Not one of her better efforts in my opinion. Tempe is amazingly slow-witted about one aspect of the mystery, which if you’ve read a lot of mystery plots as I have you’ll figure out long before she does!

WORTH CONSUMING!

I was enjoying this book until Elizabeth Costello became the Deus ex Machina. Ho, hum 100 more pages to slog through.
