Why I recommend "Eventide" — 2 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

I really enjoyed listening to this book. George Hearne, the reader, was perfect as a salt of the earth type, many of which are found in this book. It’s a gentle book, not a page-turner, but it just kind of lures you along. Beautiful. Can’t wait to get Plain Song.

A story about "MR. AND MRS. PIG'S EVENING OUT (Mr & Mrs Pigs Evening Out)" — 2 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

I remember when this British book first came out and some American critics were afraid it was too scary for children. (The Baby Sitter is a wolf.) It’s totally delightfully and my son enjoyed it when we read it together.

How "Longford" changed my life — 2 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

I’m going through something of a religious crisis right now and Longford’s faith was really moving. It’s encouraged me to think more about a return to my faith.

WORTH CONSUMING!

Very funny, very gory. An unexpected pleasure if you can use the word with this type of film!

A story about "The Death of Vishnu: A Novel" — 2 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

I wish more people would read this book. I picked it up because it was a staff pick at our local Barnes & Noble. A wonderful and beautiful book with the added plus of humor. I am waiting for the second in the trilogy. Manil, are on you it? Yeah! I see Age of Shiva is due out in Jan. 2008.

Why I recommend "Leaving Home" — 2 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

I recommend this book with reservations. It’s not a “page-turner” (Anita Brookner doesn’t write those). The main character, Emma Roberts, struggles to involve herself in life. She is very introspective, and her description of the typical English person’s introversion when encountering new people rings true with the 8 mos. I spent in England with my young family. I say typical, not universal. As an introvert myself I could empathize with many of Emma’s reactions to social situations and her envy of those who find involvement easy. So, if you number among the supposed 25% of Americans who are introverts, or if you’re an extrovert with an interest in finding out how we perceive things, enjoy.

Why I recommend "Brat Farrar" — 2 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

Although this was published in 1949 I was interested from page 1. Great plot, probably inspired a few others whose books came after it. Highly Recommended!

A story about "From Doon with Death: The First Inspector Wexford Novel (Mortalis.)" — 2 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

Over Ruth Rendell’s long career her books have become much more complex than this early Inspector Wexford novel. Perhaps it’s better to read her early ones first as I did because you’ll appreciate them more.
