WORTH CONSUMING!

Crystal and Midler get top billing, and their “Book of Love” duet is one of the highlights, but it’s the kids who get the laughs in this story of generation gaps. Nice to see the credits at the end with real pix of cast & crew families, too. A keeper.

A story about "Mad Men: Season Three" — 3 weeks ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

I was only just a little older than Sally Draper when the true life events of this season unfolded, and I remember them all so clearly, from advertising for Clearasil to the assassination of JFK. Yet there are some real shockers in Season Three, including the John Deere incident, Salvatore’s “problem,” Joan’s change of direction, Peggy’s choice of beaus and the ongoing ups and downs in the Draper family. It’s the best season so far.

WORTH CONSUMING!

This season, the series hits its stride. Civil rights, Cuban missle crisis, merger & acquisition, ethical and moral choices, and a true cliff hanger ending. Can’t wait to watch Season Three.

WORTH CONSUMING!

Golden Globe nominee Nicole Kidman sizzles in this tale of murder, justice and misdirected passions in rural Florida of the late 1960s. The plot takes more than a few zigs and zags, not the least being the revelation of Ward’s (McConaughey) dirty secret. The scene with the jellyfish was totally unexpected, too. What bothered me, however, was the way the entire story is supposedly being told by a housekeeper, years later. She could not possibly have known some of the events and at the end … well let’s just say it’s not tied up neatly like it could have been.

WORTH CONSUMING!

Although some of the characters seem stereotypical, I had to keep reminding myself of the time period (1960), when people really were rather one dimensional and America’s social consciousness was just starting to evolve. Great that my former agency got a mention in one episode. The season ended with lots of loose ends, no real cliffhanger, but I’m glad I can start watching Season Two tomorrow.

A story about "Hitchcock (Blu-ray / DVD Combo)" — 5 weeks ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

Hopkins’ portrayal of Hitch is excellent, but Mirren still outshines him as wife Alma. I enjoyed seeing some fresh views of the “master of suspense,” one of the greatest directors who never won an Oscar.

WORTH CONSUMING!

Eastwood has made a career out of playing hardass SOBs, and this role fit him just fine. Thankfully, he produced this but did not direct, which allowed Adams to shine. Timberlake held his own, too. It’s mainly about a dysfunctional father-daughter relationship, but there’s just enough baseball to keep it interesting for those wanting to see a sports movie. Some good digs at lawyering and the front office, too. Quite enjoyable.

WORTH CONSUMING!

Clearly the 2013 Oscar winner for best Animated Feature Film, and appropriately the first win ever for a female director in this category, “Brave” delivers all the adventure, excitement, humor, ethos and novelty that has made Disney-Pixar the undisputed King and Queen combination of animation. Magic, folklore, rebellion and a love story that’s not a romance … it’s a coming of age flick no teenage girl would want to miss, and parent-friendly, too.

A story about "Red Lights" — 5 weeks ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

De Niro and Weaver are consumate pros, while Murphy holds his own in this film about debunking the paranormal. The story seemed to get really disjointed about midway through. It kind of lost me for about 20 minutes. But the ending is good enough to make up for that. I didn’t see it coming at all.

A story about "The Croods" — 5 weeks ago

Dreamworks can do no wrong when it comes to animation, and the voices are not bad. It’s just that the story is nothing special, and the place where these cavemen live looks more like Avatar’s Pandora than planet Earth. Kids will probably like it, but their parents will just have to stiffle a yawn or two. It’s simply not that great.
