Why I recommend "The Mediterranean Vegan Kitchen" — 5 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

I can’t even count the number of recipes I’ve made from this, and every one has turned out beautifully.

NOT WORTH CONSUMING

I’ve only made a couple things from this: the scrambled tofu and baked cajun fries. Neither of them were great, and both required much more prep time than they were worth. They should have been easy hits, but her seasonings are way off.

Like a lot of other veg/vegan cookbooks, most of the recipes are soy or seitan based, and many of those (as well as the remaining recipes) are inspired by Asian flavors. I don’t care for any of these things. Other items not fitting into these categories have been done better elsewhere. It has several baking recipes, but I don’t even want to bother at this point and would rather simply adjust my old favorites.

The Mediterranean Vegan Kitchen, with its emphasis on fresh, clean flavors will remain my go-to book. When thinking of Isa, I’ll remember her cupcake book and forget this ever happened.

Why it's taking me forever to finish consuming "Basic Writings" — 5 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

Because it’s Heidegger, and he is somewhat long-winded, and I only read ten pages per sitting.

That said, I do adore it. I’ll just have to purchase a copy, as the library won’t let me keep renewing it forever.

A story about "The Graduate (Special Edition)" — 5 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

I’ve been thinking about this movie all day after watching it for the first time last night. I can’t get over how wonderfully executed everything was; what makes the film great is its precision and subtlety. Mrs. Robinson is a cold, calculating presence and has yet to leave my mind.

A story about "Jesus Camp" — 6 years ago

NOT WORTH CONSUMING

Having attended a few years of Christian school in the past, what was most disturbing about this is how familiar it seemed. People really do act like this, from the bullying group leaders to the terrified, self-righteous kids.

As a documentary, I wanted more substance from it. Creepy, yes, but there isn’t much information being presented here that couldn’t be acquired from one decent conversation with a Christian immersed in the culture. The personal angles run flat, as no one experiences much of anything. They show the kids, they show the camp, everyone goes home. There is no time lapse to show how anyone may have changed, for better or worse.

It feels as though the filmmakers saw something and were compelled to point at it, but ultimately had nothing to say.

Why I recommend "The Reminder" — 6 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

Amazing, beautiful record. Exceeded my high hopes after Let It Die. Haven’t stopped listening since acquiring yesterday, and expect to continue for some time to come.

A story about "Look Both Ways" — 6 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

From the first ten minutes I was worried this was going to be crazy pretentious. It turned out to be absolutely beautiful, and now I am upset at not being able to find anything else done by Sarah Watt.

A story about "The Contortionist's Handbook" — 6 years ago

NOT WORTH CONSUMING

It reads like a bad thesis paper, as if someone were assigned the project of researching identity creation and thought it would be clever to format all five hundred facts in a single narrative. It is pointless, ridiculous, self-impressed drivel. You can feel Clevenger’s ego dripping onto each page, not unlike the praise of pretentious hipsters who fawn over the novel.

Using the term ‘novel’ quite loosely.

I read this a few years ago at the behest of those whose recommendations I trusted. No more suggestions from them, thanks.

Why I recommend "Casino Royale" — 6 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

Daniel Craig is James Bond in the way Pierce Brosnan could never hope to be.

Which is to say: the best (only) Bond film worth seeing in years.

A story about "Writing Down the Bones: Freeing the Writer Within (Shambhala Pocket Classics)" — 6 years ago

NOT WORTH CONSUMING

I could hardly get through this, and was finally able to only by skipping paragraph after paragraph. Intensely repetitive (she prefers quantity over quality, and refuses to let anyone forget it). I can’t see wanting to follow her advice when her own writing is full of irrelevant tangents and dull personal anecdotes. And speaking of which: she makes several odd comments revealing her bitterness toward marriage/divorce, which leads one to believe that her writing isn’t as cathartic for her as she’d like to think, and perhaps ought to invest in a professional therapist.
