Why I gave up consuming "The First Five Pages: A Writer's Guide to Staying Out of the Rejection Pile" — 2 years ago

I can’t stand the tone of this book. Tone probably shouldn’t matter so much in a how-to book, but it does to me.

Typical medieval — 2 years ago

Maybe it’s just me, but of all the medievals I’ve read, they all seem to have a woman who doesn’t want to be a woman, and a man who will marry her anyway. I get how this pretty much has to happen in order for the modern reader to identify with the woman, since we are so culturally different, but it gets a bit tiresome.

On the plus side, the plot was a good one, if somewhat typical, and I enjoyed seeing King John featured.

Wasn’t a bad book, just not one of my favorites.

Cute! — 2 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

3 cute stories, great for reading around award show season. I particularly enjoyed the last one by Isabel Sharpe, but all of them were great!

A good old Nora. — 2 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

Yep, a good old Nora Roberts book. I enjoyed it, as I do almost everything she writes. The scenery was breathtaking, as always, and I enjoyed her heroine very much. I felt like the hero got a little shortchanged in the character development department, but that may be just because the heroine had such a surplus of “character.” The mystery was a good one, crafted expertly, and kept me turning the pages. Nice winter read. Made me wish for spring in Wyoming.

Something for everyone. — 2 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

Have you ever heard a James Bond movie described as “touching?” I thought not. Until now. But we’ll get to that in a minute.

From the first incredible chase scene to a really hot shower scene (that is so NOT what you’re thinking), it never lets up. James Bond is RIPPED, and he’ll kick your butt after he chases you on foot with poison running through his veins and his balls bruised.

Now for the touching part. I was expecting to zone out for a while, enjoy the action scenes, and not get much out of it. I was wrong. Daniel Craig brought a depth of emotion to James Bond I never thought I would see. Of course, it’s a bit easier since it’s sort of the backstory of James Bond, and there’s room for some squishy sentimentalism to show why He Is The Way He Is, but it’s well done squishy sentimentalism and I enjoyed every minute of it.

And Daniel Craig? Is my new pretend boyfriend. Sorry, Hugh Jackman. You can still be my pretend friend with benefits with whom I have the occasional affair when Daniel Craig bothers me.

In conclusion, something for everyone, and highly recommended.

Why I gave up consuming "The Bridge" — 2 years ago

The book has a great feeling to it, I just can’t get into it. It bothers me to read about this guy’s dysfunctional family, almost like I’m living through it myself. I think that probably makes him a good writer, but it makes his book hard to read.

Playful, but more — 2 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

One of the best books I’ve read in a long while. When I picked it up, I was expecting a playful, sacrilegious romp, which I got, but I was surprised to find something of much more depth too. For people like me, who grew up in the church, but have—uh—strayed somewhat in our later years, Jesus is an interesting problem. Even if we still claim to believe in God, what can we do about Jesus and all that wacky stuff he said, and is there a way to get down to his message without that whole sacrifice-for-sin thing, etc, etc. Christopher Moore does an excellent job of addressing all of those things without being an ass about it.

If you’re devout, this book will offend you. If you’re not, it might just help you reframe all those Bible stories you heard as a kid.

If you, uh, were never really into the whole Jesus thing in the first place, you’ll probably find this book kind of boring. You’ll miss the vast majority of the jokes if you don’t have a pretty strong working knowledge of the New Testament.

I, personally, laughed and cried and thought, and I conclude that I very much enjoyed this book.

A Writer's Happy Ending — 3 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

As a writer, I have to say this has been my favorite of the Bridgerton series. The two writing characters are so endearing, I was sad when the story was over. Fun, entertaining read, as I always expect from Julia Quinn.

Exciting! — 3 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

I had a great time reading this book because of the fast plot, the great action scenes, and the sizzling chemistry between the main characters. Jenna’s hero and heroine are so much fun to follow! The mystery kept me guessing, but the real treat for me was seeing Carolyn and Gray relearn each other and come to a new understanding between them.

I can’t help but mention the highly entertaining supporting characters, Hannah and Jules, and I hope they’ll have a book of their own somewhere along the line.

Overall, a fun, satisfying read!

Speaks to the heart, without annoying fluffiness. — 3 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

Most of the time, How To Write books are either reeeeally touchy feely, or completely technical. I get annoyed about books like that because writing is a combination of both. So I wasn’t convinced I’d much care for this book, which leans toward the touchy feely. I was NOT expecting to find touchy-feely with a hint of tough love.

I enjoyed it very much. Lamott manages to inspire without fist-pumping theatrics or lies about the publishing business. Instead, she offers humorous, straight-forward, sometimes tough-love advice aimed at helping you get over yourself and get on to your writing. If you’re in a rut, do yourself a favor and pick up this book. It helped me immensely.
