Although I am coming to this book as a 40-year-old mother who still loves to read children’s literature and young adult fiction, it had been some time since I read something that I enjoyed as thoroughly as I enjoyed this book.
I could see that this might not be a book for a very young audience or for someone who looks for a lot of action and conflict in their reads, but I thoroughly enjoyed learning more about the time period and a woman’s (and young girl’s) role in that time period. There were all kinds of interesting little tidbits about the food of the time, the dress of the time and the expectations of women at the time that I had no clue about. Best of all, it was written in such a way as not to highlight those interesting facts, but merely address them as they were seen at the time …simply the way it was.
Meg’s character was very likeable, intelligent and witty!
I felt that if you put this book in an adult section of the library, that adults would enjoy it as much as young adults and children. Truly well written! I also highly recommend it to anyone interested in historical fiction (a genre I’m not even all that keen on most of the time).
