Not even a strong performance by Garbo could save this sentimental rot.

Would have been much, much better if the lead actress had any acting skill whatsoever.
As good today as it was when it was made. As close to perfection as they come. And Jimmy Stewart to boot!
Most people probably watch this film because of Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers, but be warned that they are only secondary characters to a pretty silly love story. Their performances easily outshine the lead actors’ and it is obvious why they were quickly given the spotlight.
I can see how it was probably seen as very fitting that the storyline is based around aliens. The characters have aged into the 1950s, when aliens were all the rage and science fiction came into its own. I can understand how Spielberg and company wanted to pay homage to that culture and time. But I still kept expecting it to be something more. I mean, really? Aliens? Who knew that I, an atheist, so enjoyed the religious tones of the previous movies? Harrison Ford is obviously too old, almost embarrassingly so, and no amount of action from Shia LeBouef can make up for that. I respect them for bringing Karen Allen back, but where did the hellcat go – I guess being a mom took most of it out of her? Mostly you finish the film (or give up halfway through if you’re my boyfriend) and come away with the enforced opinion that the original trilogy was special and still stands the test of time. It might also make you extremely nostalgic for the days before every shot in an action movie revolved around CGI – remember when stunts looked dangerous (if not real), and sets could take your breath away? Not so much a rebirth of a past icon, but an undeserved nail in his coffin.
Really disappointing for a Danny Boyle fan – completely manic and at times revolting. Timothy Spall gives a wonderful performance which is over-the-top in all the right ways, but the film is so horribly pumped up and edited that it gets quite tiring in about 10 minutes.
Despite some great songs, including a stirring performance of “Old Man River” which is one of the best songs of cinematic history, this movie was never all that great. Ava Gardner’s performance is so wonderful they even try to force her into the sappy ending, but she is unfortunately gone through most of the film.
The movie follows Clint Eastwood across the south and west after his family is killed and he swears revenge. It has lots of colorful characters and keeps the attention, but after a while it becomes almost monotonous. Oh, another scene where Eastwood is in a tight spot and manages to outsmart and shoot everyone involved. Parts of it came off MST3K-worthy as the bad guys would practically take a tea break between drawing their pistols and actually firing them, giving Wales plenty of time to take them out with style.
If only all screen legends had the chance to go out like this.
