A story about "Whale Talk" — 4 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

I love Cris Crutcher. I don’t care how much he chooses the same characteristics and family history patterns over and over, or that every book has the same main theme, the man can just write. I hated the way it climaxed, but I can forgive.

A story about "Royal Ransom" — 4 years ago

I love Eric Walters. If I taught grades 4-8, my kids would be required to read one of his books each year. Any one. He does this fabulous cross of history and fiction and adventure and just has fun. Not hard to guess he’s a teacher from his books, and I mean that in the best way possible. However, this particular book is falling short of my expectations. It’s good, it’s just not the rip roaring good time I usually get from him.

A story about "Gingerbread" — 4 years ago

I loved Cyd’s voice, her attitude, and the way the author approached her inner workings. She might be a wild, willful child, but she’s obviously loving and struggling. We’ve all been in her shoes to some extent or another. The use of language in this book was fabulous. I’d love to rec it with that E.R. Frank book of short stories; the authors really give their characters distinctive ways of using their words. I’m never very good and endings, and this one meets my complaint of ending too perfectly, but I can forgive it that ‘cause I liked them all too.

WORTH CONSUMING!

Good, although I probably won’t find myself rereading. I’m not sure if the climax ran too fast or just seemed too forced, but I definitely felt the book ended too soon. Felt like a first book, which it is, so I’m still looking forward to finding Keeping the Moon in the bargain section. I was unnecessarily worried at the beginning that there was going to be inappropriate sexual behaviour between Haven and Sumner Lee, but this book is definitely about Haven.

WORTH CONSUMING!

I love Oliver Sach’s overuse of footnotes in this book. His quirky rendering of his childhood experiments, as well as a mix of science history, makes a great read for anyone interested but not necessarily involved in the field.

Somehow manages to merge the history of the Armanian slaughter with Anorexia without resorting to cheap ploys.

A story about "The Neptune File: A Story of Astronomical Rivalry and the Pioneers of Planet Hunting (Science Matters) (Science Matters)" — 5 years ago

The politics of science with a bit of math thrown in for measure.

WORTH CONSUMING!

While this isn’t as educated as many of his other writings, nor on other articles on the matter, Sachs takes a good look at how Deaf culture and it’s place in the surrounding world has changed.

Eh. Definitely not one of Bauer’s best, although bits of it make for a cute read.
