A story about "Lucky Wander Boy" — 6 years ago

Sort of in the same vein as the Gen-X/Microserfs era of Coupland (which I love), but not a copy-cat. It’s somewhat darker and less focused in general. Weiss doesn’t use as tight a narrative structure (despite the book’s sometimes heavy-handed, multi-layered videogame metaphor) as those early books of Coupland. Also, I was sorely disappointed by the ending. Whatever Weiss intended was completely lost on me, and it comes across as a cop-out. All that being said, it’s still worth the read, especially if you grew up on classic video games.

A story about "The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time : A Novel" — 6 years ago

I’ve had an interest in Asperger’s (sp?) syndrome since seeing a newsmag segment on it last year. He’s taken a very mundane plot and given a powerful twist by filtering it through a narrator who is afflicted with this form of autism. But instead of just making him a freak, he completely humanizes him, making us see the world through his eyes in a way that I’ve never seen another writer do as well for an autistic narrator. It was at once both alien and familiar. A remarkable book.

A great intro to designing with CSS. Even the experienced will learn a few things and certainly fill in a few holes.

A story about "Chen Style: The Source of Taijiquan" — 6 years ago

I’ve recently taken up again with my study and practice of chen style taiji (t’ai chi). This book is a great overview of the history, roots, and concepts behind chen style, but doesn’t teach the forms themselves. An essential book for anyone studying chen style.

A story about "Female Ruins" — 6 years ago

I wonder why Nicholson has never shown up on my radar. This book randomly caught my eye at the library the other day, being brightly colored at at eye-level (about 5 ft. 3 in. or so on me) in our public library. I have really enjoyed the first 50 or so pages, and I’m looking forward to reading more of his work.
