A story about "Hyperion" — 5 years ago

I first read this after the sequel (really the second half of the story) came out and was blown away. Galaxy-spanning, mind-blowing space opera (and that’s not a knock in my book) with a remarkably personal and visceral appeal. This is the third time I’ve read it, and it just gets better.

A story about "Down and Out in the Magic Kingdom" — 5 years ago

After reading the sample chapters Cory released last year, I downloaded this book and started reading with relish when it was released Monday. My local bookstores don’t have it in stock, but I’ve ordered it. I’ll read it again when the hardcopy arrives. It’s that good.

A story about "The Day I Turned Uncool: Confessions of a Reluctant Grown-up" — 5 years ago

Though I wasn’t the slacker/hellraiser that Zevin was, I still identify pretty heavily with a lot of what he has to say about suddenly finding yourself an adult (more or less).

A story about "The Fall of Hyperion" — 5 years ago

I’m re-reading this for the first time in several years. I just finished my re-read of Hyperion and was just amazed at how good it was. So, I had to re-read the sequel as well.

A story about "The New Father: A Dad's Guide to the First Year (New Father)" — 5 years ago

Well, the baby’s due in about seven weeks, so I figured it’s about time to start reading up on these baby things. So far, it’s very interesting. It’s organized by first week, then 1 month, 2 months, etc. Each chapter tells you what the baby should be doing, what you should do, etc. I read the first few chapters. I’ll read them (and more) again once the baby’s here. I’m kinda on baby info overload right now, all of which will dissolve when the baby arrives, I’m sure.

A story about "Flyboy Action Figure Comes with Gasmask" — 5 years ago

Way wacky book: solid Gen-X with scifi twists. I powered through the first half in one sitting (well, lying, actually). Powered through the second half the next night. Good book. I’m already looking forward to reading his other two novels.

A story about "Pattern Recognition" — 5 years ago

Gibson’s first book about the “present” (what/whenever that is). Sort of a pop culture international spy thriller, but written like only Gibson can. There are enough sorta loose ends that you can see how he might pick up something for future, related books. I’m already looking forward to them.

A story about "Jennifer Government : A Novel" — 5 years ago

I thought it looked like fun, but I got bogged down in all the hyper-commericiaism. I’m apparently not in the mood for satire right now. Maybe I’ll try again in a few months.

A story about "Revelation Space" — 5 years ago

I was looking for some good space opera to read, and the cover caught my eye. Really. Total spur-of-the-moment purchase. It’s, ah, interesting. It’s one of those books where, instead of occasionally dropping a page or more of infodump on you, just let you follow along blindly, not really sure what a lot of things are. It’s a way to go, I guess.

I finally finished it. The first half is slow, but it really starts to pick up speed after that. The ending’s a little “galactic scale” for my tastes, but it was a good ending. The second half is worth the work you have to put in on the front end.

A story about "Blind Waves" — 5 years ago

Interesting bit of near-future sci-fi adventure. I always like near-future, post-disaster stuff. This one has 100 miles of coastline around the world innundated due to melting icecaps. Other than that, it’s a pretty standard adventure-mystery-crime sorta novel.
