Science Adventure (rated 4 stars)

Back to the Moon: A Novel

by Homer Hickam

I’m a sucker for science adventure books like this. It’s got an outlandish plot, but is deftly and tightly written so it comes across not as ridiculious but fun. The characters are a bit flimsy, which is true for all science books like this, but one in paticular was very unconvincing, the biologist superstar love interest. Gimmie a break. That said, the characters aren’t the point here, the scientific ideas are, and this book has a good handful of them, and makes for a brisk fun read.

A story about "Animal Farm"

Animal Farm

by George Orwell

Maybe I’m just a little sick of this book, considering I’ve had to study it again and again since 8th grade. And I understood it completely then, because there is just not that much to get. Yes, the animals represent people and ideas. Yeah, I get that Boxer is a reference to the Boxer Rebellion. Frankly, I’m sick of it. Let’s face it: Orwell is unavoidable in a high school cirriculum, and teachers have to choose between the complex, or at least more in depth 1984, or the simple, easy and clear Animal Farm. And they keep choosing Animal Farm. I have an idea- this book should be taught to kids in grade school and then never taught again. It’s simple, plain, no longer interesting, and I’m done with it.

A story about "Minority Report (Widescreen Two-Disc Special Edition)"

Also, the end made me want to put my head in a trash compactor. Precogs on the prarie.
