A story about "Beyond This Horizon" — 2 years ago

Interestingly, I picked this book out to read at the same time that my own first child was born. Why? I wanted to read some Heinlein and it stood out as a title I hadn’t yet read. Hm. Funny how timing works out.

My favorite — 2 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

This might be my favorite beer in the whole world. It’s smooth and triple fermented. I just love it.

Starship Troopers, sorta — 2 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

This book really reminded me of Starship Troopers in terms of story.

It was a page-turner, and I enjoyed it thoroughly.

So bad... — 2 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

So bad that it circles all the way back ‘round to good again. Seriously, I had this pegged as an awful movie about four minutes in, but kept watching because it was soooooo bad.

A story about "A Middle English Reader and Vocabulary" — 2 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

This book is cool. Because it’s a bunch of selected readings, you can dip in and read for a few minutes (mostly) without committing yourself to reading say, the whole of the Canterbury Tales.

The reading is a little tricky. Words aren’t used in quite the same way. Spelling isn’t regular from one writer to the next. Sometimes it’s almost impossible to read (though by the third time through, it’s usually clear, if not, I skip on). And the poetry is so lyric it’s like reading a strange music.

A story about "The Essential Hitler: Speeches and Commentary" — 2 years ago

It seems like it took forever for us to make this book.

Anyway, you should buy it. It helps to pay the mortgage here and to make you smart about how to avoid nasty dictators.

A story about "Manifold: Space (Manifold (Paperback))" — 2 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

Manifold: Space was good, but Manifold: Time was even better.

Entertaining enough — 2 years ago

NOT WORTH CONSUMING

I saw this movie with a neice and nephew. They enjoyed it enough—maybe enough that they’ll want the video to watch many times—but I doubt it. They weren’t talking about it all the way home. On the other hand, they did stay quiet through the whole movie. So good enough.

I also enjoyed the movie well enough. It was entertaining. Without spoiling the plot, there is some time travel involved—and I’m a sucker for time-travel stories. So I enjoyed that aspect. The rest of the movie was likewise conceived and executed in a solid, workman’s manner. While the movie is aimed at a younger audience, it is not so saccharine that adults can’t watch it. Quite the contrary, it is watchable and fun.

My gripe with the movie is this: the story only worked on one level. Where Shrek made clever reference to things that adults would get, Meet the Robinsons told the story and noting more. Which is a pity, because the movie is otherwise charming and entertaining.

Why I recommend "Classical Considerations: Useful Wisdom from Greece And Rome" — 2 years ago

Because I wrote a few bits of this book.

A story about "Solaris" — 2 years ago

So far…

I’m not even fifty pages into the book, and it is already way weirder than the Russian film version.

This is one of of the weirder things I’ve read—and I have read lots of Philip K. Dick and Robert Anton Wilson. I know from weird science fiction.
