This is very unlike Salinger’s most well-known work (The Catcher in the Rye), but it is most beautiful. My only exposure to Salinger for many years had been Catcher, so I was pleasantly surprised by this story.

This might be my favorite Irving book. It’s the first I read and it’s what got me hooked on Irving. If you’ve ever felt like you didn’t belong at church, you’ll identify with the main character. And even if you feel like you belong perfectly at church, it should be interesting for you to read about someone who struggles with organized religion.

I gobbled up all the books in this series as a child.

I read this book in high school and it’s stayed one of my favorites ever since. We could all learn a little from Asher Lev. If you enjoy this book, try the sequel—The Gift of Asher Lev.

This isn’t the best writing in the world, but the story is amazing. If you’ve seen the movie, you should definitely read the book. Even if you haven’t seen the movie, read this!

This wasn’t the first Irving book that I read, but it’s definitely one of my favorites. If you’ve never read any Irving novels, this is a great one to start with. As always, his characters are eccentric. This one has sex, violence, and humor…what more could you want?
