A story about "Lies My Teacher Told Me: Everything Your American History Textbook Got Wrong" — 4 years ago

I loved this book. At first I wasn’t sure I’d be able to get through it because I’ve always thought history was boring. But I was probably basing that on my experience with history classes in school, which I now know is not unique to me. This book was very easy to read and extremely interesting.

As the quotation from Howard Zinn on the front says, “every teacher, every student of history, every citizen should read this book.” I learned so much more about our nation’s history than in all my years of “social studies” and history classes in elementary, middle, and high school.

Loewen has awakened a passion for history that lay dormant inside me, and I can’t wait to read more “history” books!

The book also inspired me to think about ways to circumvent the horrid history textbooks our children are using in school. One idea I had is to facilitate a network of history teachers in my area so if they choose to not use the textbook for every lesson plan, they’ll have resources to draw from in their colleagues. Anyway, I’ll keep thinking!

A story about "Mothering Magazine's Having a Baby, Naturally: The Mothering Magazine Guide to Pregnancy and Childbirth" — 4 years ago

Every woman who’s about to have a baby or thinking about one day having a baby should read this book! It has a wealth of information to help you through the childbirth experience, which is an experience that unfortunately Americans have learned to fear rather than embrace and even savor.

A story about "How to Stop the Next War Now: Effective Responses to Violence and Terrorism" — 4 years ago

I’m about 75 pages into this book so far, and I love it. It offers up a lot of food for thought, including ideas for moving from a “dominator” model in our society to a more democratic “partnership” model, how to educate your children in peacebuilding, and so on.
