Why I recommend "I'm Not There (Two-Disc Collector's Edition)" — 1 year ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

This is not your Cola and popcorn movie. It has a complex narrative and form, but if you are slightly familiar with the story behind what made Dylan, you would like it very much.

I recommend this movie because I think it perfectly shows that Bob Dylan is not only the name for a singer-songwriter, but it’s somehow a Zeitgeist of American music for past decades.

For those who are unfamiliar with the story of Dylan, I recommend watching two outstanding documentary films first: “No Direction Home” by Scorsese and “Don’t Look Back” by D.A. Pennebaker.

Finally, Christian Bale and Cate Blanchett shine in this movie.

WORTH CONSUMING!

Dealing with death, dying, and bereavement, this good documentary can keep a very good balance between being informative and showing the actions and emotions of people who deal with death as a parent, a close relative, the dying person him/herself, and the undertaker.

Most of all, I liked calm, deep, and friendly character of Thomas Lynch. Also don’t miss Lynch reading his piece entitled “Tract”:

Yes, February. With the cold behind and the cold before you and the darkness stubborn at the edges of the day. And a wind to make the cold more bitter. So that ever after it might be said, “It was a sad old day we did it after all.”[...] And you should see it till the very end. Avoid the temptation of tidy leavetaking in a room, a cemetery chapel, at the foot of the altar. None of that. Don’t dodge it because of the weather. We’ve fished and watched football in worse conditions. It won’t take long. Go to the hole in the ground. Stand over it. Look into it. Wonder. And be cold. But stay until it’s over. Until it is done.[...] Have no fear—you’ll know what to do. Go now, I think you are ready.

Why I recommend "Maya Deren: Experimental Films" — 2 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

I guess, her career was very influential for American Avant-garde and independent cinema. “Meshes of the Afternoon” can easily be counted as something which influenced lots of movies with unconventional and even circular narrative.
