Why I recommend "She'll Take It" — 2 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

I love this because it doesn’t fall into the popular “whiny” set of chick lit fashionistas where the only thing that’s compelling about the protagonist is that they’ve got a sense of right and wrong but everything else about them is in shambles.

Right until almost the end you’re kept wondering who she eventually ends up with, and there are even more twists. This isn’t a mystery book, but an enjoyable read. Great stuff.

NOT WORTH CONSUMING

this is the next instalment of the “finish all the books you’ve already spent too much money on before buying new ones you fool!”

i’m so glad it’s the weekend. i need a good, solid dose of romance. i know, it’s sad that i’m getting it from a book :P

A story about "The Dip: A Little Book That Teaches You When to Quit (and When to Stick)" — 2 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

i’m halfway through and i’ll say it’s confusing me. it’s yes – and no – and yes – and no – i don’t know what to do.

Why it's taking me forever to finish consuming "The Old-girl Network" — 2 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

Because it’s actually two stories in one book, and I stopped reading after she gets her man. :P I’ll get there eventually.

Why it's taking me forever to finish consuming "Mind Hacks: Tips & Tools for Using Your Brain (Hacks)" — 3 years ago

Great that we have this “why it’s taking so long” thingie… it’s taking ages because I keep wanting to jump to different sections all the time!

A story about "Me Talk Pretty One Day" — 3 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

I’d say it’s worth consuming as it sparkles in sections, but it loses momentum halfway through the book. It’s almost like the author or editor knows this because there are certain parts where it’s so different, or so funny, compared to what came before it it’s like the electric shock applied to restart hearts.

Some parts are certainly laugh-out-loud, but nowhere near as funny as it’s touted to be. Don’t fall for the hype and build up your expectations, and you’ll be ok.

A story about "Book of Tells" — 3 years ago

NOT WORTH CONSUMING

I think this was more a waste of my time rather than time well spent in reading it. There are a few things I picked up here, especially the part about smoking tells, but other than that, it seems hastily put-together and leaky around the edges.

I think I’m just more used to reading stricter anthropological books than this, but as an introduction for someone who hasn’t been yet introduced, it may be a fair start.

A review of "Jane Austen's Guide to Dating" — 3 years ago

NOT WORTH CONSUMING

In retrospect, I think I bought this book more for the promises that it held, rather than what I thought I could usefully get out of it.

The author uses her knowledge of Austen’s works (having researched them academically) to illustrate what to, and what not to do, in today’s dating game.

Argues that with a few tweaks, Austen’s depictions of the courting couples in the Regency period are just as valid and useful today as they were then. Also uses ‘real-life’ couples’ situations as illustrations of the ‘yes’ and ‘no’ versions of how to deal with scenarios such as being overeager, or being too restrained, or knowing when to get out of a relationship.

Has quizzes at the back of which character you’re likely to be (I was Elizabeth Bennet), or which character you’re most likely to get along with (duh as for who I’m most likely to dig if I’m Elizabeth!).

Trouble is, I found it somewhat lacking in substance and found myself reading it more for the sake of finishing it rather than anything else.

Wouldn’t recommend it much. Maybe if you borrowed it from someone.

A story about "Catch 22" — 3 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

I guess a steady diet of the ugliness of man has to include some of this, the beauty of man’s thought set against a backdrop of the horror of man’s desires. Until today it’s one of the books that I share with my younger brother, and we quote it to death.

I actually read the paperback copy in the photo above, and one of my proudest acquisitions was a reprint that came out the year I was born.

A question I have about "Book of Tells" — 3 years ago

NOT WORTH CONSUMING

It tries to pack a lot into a very short book, or at least that’s the way it seems to me. Maybe not as backed-up with references as I would like, but then I’ve also been reading Desmond Morris.

A little too populist, wish there were some illustrations instead of paragraphs of “and this means this… except when it could be this”.
