Why I recommend "The Prophet" — 2 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

Because we need something like this to turn over in our minds; it’s so relevant as it’s timeless.

It’s poetic, and not cloyingly so;

This is a collection of thoughts and feelings that mean something, something that has been lived, digested, and embroidered in gold for all to see.

WORTH CONSUMING!

Because too much has been happening in real time and space, and there has been, well, little opportunity to continue reading something so timeless. Perhaps this weekend?

WORTH CONSUMING!

Not that I intend to take forever, but it’s a very timeless space, and it’s both moving me to tears and making me leap inside.

WORTH CONSUMING!

I’ve read about it so many times, over and over in all my travels. So now I am reading it and am about 11 pages in.

The words are drawing me in. I can already feel it’s something that will be read, turned over, folded in, breathed out.

Perhaps it’s not really that I am reading it, but it is feeding me, reading me.

WORTH CONSUMING!

It’s taking me awhile, as usual. I’ve figured out that this is all right, as I have been placing books strategically around the house. This is the book I read when I have a few spare minutes if I’m upstairs. That’s why it will probably take a month or two to read :)

I am going to leave Kahlil Gibran’s “The Prophet” in my car to read in traffic jams. It’s a bit hard to read an economics textbook (too clunky to fit behind the steering wheel, too difficult to grasp in 1.5-min gaps), the one in the passenger seat now :P

Why I recommend "Jonathan Livingston Seagull" — 2 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

I’m a bit more biased toward liking this book rather than against it. It was something that my dad used to refer to – sometimes – and I had on my own volition read Richard Bach’s “One” when I was a pre-teen. Bach was for many years an airline pilot, and it heavily influences his writing.

I think that made me more receptive to the idea that I might like this one, and I wasn’t disappointed. The ideas in JLS resonate quite strongly with the present-Me: in that there is more to oneself than this self, and that the search for perfection can only be sought and felt in this very moment.

It’s not a preachy book, which I like – but also that it doesn’t pretend to be anything other than an allegorical tale of one’s own search for more. It’s a book that takes a very short time to finish but is food for rolling around in your mind for weeks at a time.

I can understand now why it fascinated an entire generation of readers, as it came at a time when I think these ideas (which seem so commonplace now) weren’t ready for release without the cover of storytelling.

A story about "I Take This Man" — 2 years ago

NOT WORTH CONSUMING

This was a bit of a waste of time because it seemed to spend too much time on developing a story with multiple tracks and while I normally find this interesting, chick lit paperbacks are supposed to get to the point faster – purely due to the book length constraints. This would’ve been much more interesting as a longer-length novel.

Why I recommend "Living Out Loud" — 2 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

I’ve been a fan of Keri Smith for ages and always said to myself that I’d get this book. Well, it took me many years (and Keri has since written another 2 books) but I finally got a copy and I am well pleased.

I’m not sure what I was looking for but I was in a bit of a rut – I’m not a creative professional but I do write for a living; this book reminds me that play is as essential as work, and that rejuvenation is necessary.

Why it's taking me forever to finish consuming "The Wall Street Journal Complete Money and Investing Guidebook" — 2 years ago

Because my job means that I learn things piecemeal and that’s what’s happening with this book! But I am determined to make more headway and I will document each chapter as I am able to read it. I hope to finish the 10 chapters in 10 weeks or less. Today, I finished Chapter 10, Real Estate Investing.

But it was a short chapter :P

I’ve finished many more chapters but I’ve long ago forgotten em. Bah.

Why I recommend "The Old-girl Network" — 2 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

If you can get past the whiny protagonist – why do chick heroines always have to be so annoying – it’s a great set of books to read before nodding off. A little dose of romance and hope :P
