Why I recommend "Venice Against the Sea: A City Besieged" — 3 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

If you think the Katrina/New Orleans scenario was a disaster…imagine the same thing happening to the most gorgeous city on the face of the earth. Venice is sinking and it’s destruction is imminent, and along with it almost 2,000 years of culture and history.

How "D.V." changed my life — 3 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

I read this book my freshman year in college and I have since to encounter its like. Vreeland was truly a 20th century iconoclast, and ooh child, could she tell some whoppers! An incredible raconteuse, it’s often hard to discern where the life ends and good storytelling begins. If I could have a life 1/256th as interesting as hers I would consider myself blessed. Do yourself a favor and read it, you’ll thank me for it.

WORTH CONSUMING!

What the hell was up with Julie Christie’s multi-colored hairpieces? I guess it just goes to show you we should be grateful for how extensions have evolved.

Anyway…am I loca if I have a crush on Julie Christie AND George C. Scott at the same time?

And can I get a hell yeah for Richard Chamberlain’s Purple pantsuit with the white overcoat and initial belt buckle?

Now I want to sail from San Francisco to Lima.

NOT WORTH CONSUMING

This movie was incredibly painful. Kudos to Connery for trying a character nowhere even near Bond…and doing so with gusto. The script is unwatchable. You literally will not understand what the people are saying. And Joanne Woodward…her voice is so shrill, it’s painful.

A review of "The Diamond: A Novel" — 3 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

I admit I was completely enticed by the cover. I am a absolute junkie for the Napoleonic era, and Louis XIV too for that matter. The author undertakes to tell the story of the biggest diamond in the world (for that time)...as it gets passed from hand to hand. The unfortunate thing is that this type of narrative doesn’t really lend itself to any cohesive plot. We are witnesses to episodes, that don’t really mean that much. It is also complicated by the ploy she uses to give us the narrator. Although surprisingly much of the action is true…there is too much of it, only marginally contextualized by the diamond, and in the end you just don’t care. I couldn’t finish it.

WORTH CONSUMING!

People have compared this movie to the Ice Storm. If you could only see one, I say go for this one. The more Woody Allen movies I watch from his golden era, the more I am convinced that he’s an incredible artist. This movie does not disappoint. However, it’s intensely depressing. Someone said that John Waters said that if the dialog was in swedish, we’d all think that this was a masterpiece. Well I’ll say this…I’d rather watch this than any Bergman movie.

Cue Rainstorm...Cue Saxaphone...Cue Melanie Griffith — 3 years ago

NOT WORTH CONSUMING

Oy vey, what did I expect just from reading the cast list? Is there anyone more annoying on earth than Melanie Griffith? I love that in this movie she’s supposed to be this showstopper mobster’s girlfriend, but she’s only allowed to wear pants with waistbands that sit right under her boobs. And Sean Bean plays an awesome Fonzie that would put Henry Winkler to shame.

LADIES! If you are looking for some new material to watch along the lines of the much vaunted Pride and Prejudice with Colin Firth, this is certainly calling your name. All I will say is that the ending definitely doesn’t dissapoint!

WORTH CONSUMING!

The beginning is kind of slow, but as it is a short film, the drama builds quickly. It is a bad dvd transfer, but the movie is still beautiful in its way.
