A review of "Beware of God : Stories" — 3 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

This short story collection is a witty, entertaining and insightful look at how we see God and the strange ways that religion influences how people think and act. From hamsters praying to “Joe” for food, to a Jewish man who suddenly wakes up and finds himself in a “goy” body, this is definitely worth reading for anyone who’s ever seen the silliness inherent in religion.

WORTH CONSUMING!

A new favorite book. This is absolutely gorgeous, provocative, stunning… I couldn’t put it down (trite, but true.)

A story about "Dreams from My Father: A Story of Race and Inheritance" — 3 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

I almost literally could not put this book down. His story is interesting and told with eloquence, honesty, and insight. It is incredibly intimate look into one man’s search for his identity, and yet it also provides an important viewpoint on the state of race relations in the United States.

WORTH CONSUMING!

After listening to the guys at working quoting the “Samuel Jackson” beer commercial and walking around going “I’m Rick James, bitch!”, I had to pick up a copy of this, and so far, I have not been disappointed. I think besides the Samuel Jackson commercial, my favorite sketch on disc 1 is the racial draft.

A story about "Shalimar the Clown: A Novel" — 4 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

Right now, this book feels very strange. The books I’ve been reading recently have been the kind that grab you and drag you through from cover to cover and barely let you take a breath in the middle. This isn’t one of those. It’s much slower reading; you have to read every word carefully becaues Rushdie will change the meaning of a whole sentence with one little unexpected adjective that, if you were reading too quickly, you could skim over and never know what you missed. The story is told in segments; each character is given a chapter in which his or her own personal part of the story is fleshed out. I’m intrigued to see where this goes now that I’ve gotten into it. It’s definitely worth taking the time to get into, anyway.

A story about "That Hideous Strength (Space Trilogy, Book 3)" — 4 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

This was the most compelling book in Lewis’ Space Trilogy. Though it continues the story of Dr. Ransom, it feels entirely unlike the first two books, taking place entirely on Earth, and being some odd combination of conspiracy-theory and fantasy. This is definitely worth reading though, even if you were, like me, somewhat let down by Perelandra.

NOT WORTH CONSUMING

A story about "Winter's Heart (The Wheel of Time, Book 9)" — 4 years ago

Well, I finally finished this. I hardly remembered who everyone was when I started, and the book didn’t help much. As usual, Jordan is still opening up more threads, with little indication that he’s anywhere near finishing. The ending was decent, but very little happened until that point, and some of the major plotlines were completely ignored.

WORTH CONSUMING!

I had to read this for my British history class, but it’s worth reading anyway.
