A review of "Morningwood" — 3 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

I really enjoy rock bands fronted by women (eg, elastica, garbage, veruca salt), but have only really listened to british chick rock, not really american. I understand Morningwood come from New York, they are a 4 piece rock band with a female singer.

My favourite 2 tracks off this album are “Nth Degree” – which is the single I heard on Juice here (one of our MTV-type channels) and “Jetsetter”.

The music has a very new wave and punk type feel about it – which kind of explains why I like it so much. Also, Nth Degree (for me at least) has a similar feel to some of the Saint Etienne tracks off Good Humor.

Anyway, I’m super impressed by these guys. I hope they get the airplay they deserve.

WORTH CONSUMING!

I’m not usually a fan of hip-hop, but I really did quite enjoy this album. My favourite track is actually the Diamonds From Sierra Leone Bonus Track. The sort of hip-hop I usually enjoy is things like Mos Def, and Roots Manuva, but I do rate Kanye West.

One of my friends was in this :-) She was in the front row in the typing class scene. She also tells me she had a line, but it ended up on the cutting room floor

WORTH CONSUMING!

I really enjoyed this book. I read it in 2 sittings tho. It’s a really easy read. Took me about 2 hours, and the first hour of that I was real tired.

On the copy that I have (or at least I borrowed) it has a tagline from The Guardian that I think is very fitting, and I’ll unashamedly use it…

A funny as well as sad book

WORTH CONSUMING!

Steve (from Sarah and Steve fame if you know me or them) recommended a whole stack of Led Zep to me (which is why I’m consuming so much at the moment). This album really impressed me.

WORTH CONSUMING!

My friends Sarah and Steve recommended this album to me. I also had heard “DANGER! HIGH VOLTAGE!” before and loved it but didn’t realise it was Electric Six.

You can definitely tell there is rock/punk roots here, but it also sounds to me like this band had a significant electronic influence as well – at least that’s what it sounds like to me. “Gay Bar” and “DANGER! HIGH VOLTAGE!” particularly have this feel to me.

I’m a fan.

I found that this book wasn’t as interesting as I had hoped. It was quite an easy read in that there is based around the disk drive industry, and that makes it feel like one cohesive case study. However I didn’t find the observations that insightful. In essence, the advice is take each innovation/product as it comes, and prepare to learn and be very agile. I would expect that any company that is embarking upon a product that is new in the marketplace would plan on being agile and learning.

That’s why it’s only 3/5 – It’s OK. But not great.

NOT WORTH CONSUMING

That’s how I found it. The album left me feeling quite empty. Like I hadn’t really been listening to anything. The only track I actually enjoyed off the album was “Black Girl”, and I think the reason for that was because I really like the Nirvana acoustic version “Where did you sleep last night” from their Unplugged album.

I was recommended this album by a friend, and she’s not usually wrong about music that I’ll like.

I was quite disappointed.
