A story about "Mindless Eating: Why We Eat More Than We Think" — 1 year ago

I wish this book had been more about the psychology of eating and less just another diet book. The parts that were more pop psych I really enjoyed, but the advice seemed just to present variations on a theme already well-trodden, and perpetuated who knows how many ugly stereotypes. Anyhow…

A story about "Tripping the Prom Queen: The Truth About Women and Rivalry" — 1 year ago

I could see where this book could be a good reality check for the well-adjusted, or the not so well adjusted, really. I’m familiar with a lot of the situations she describes, but I think me and the women around me are starting to be able to transcend a lot of the issues that come with discomfort with our competetive natures. I think I’m generally pretty aware of when I’m feeling jealousy, and I certainly don’t make the demands on my friendships that the author describes. Hopefully my work future will also manage to avoid the sticky situations I have so far…

Anyway, worth a read, it goes quite quickly and gives you lots of opportunities to re-evaluate your own relationships.

A story about "Nowhere in Africa: An Autobiographical Novel" — 1 year ago

Note to self: Avoid books labelled with the term “Autobiographical Novel”

Neither novel nor memoir, this book meanders through the lives of several Jewish emigrees spending the war years in Kenya. Somehow the author failed to make me care at all about any of them.

And yet it’s been made into an award winning movie (in French, I think). Huh.

Makes it tough to visit the supermarket. — 1 year ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

While I must admit that it’s fairly obvious throughout that this book originated as a series of articles, it’s definitely a thought-provoking tour through the kinds of production food in America (and Canada) sees today.

I spent the first section of the book exclaiming out loud and reading pieces to my husband. The second and third parts had less impact, but gave an important perspective on the first.

Not all of us can manage to cut ourselves partly or completely off from the industrial food complex, but for those who don’t see why it would ever be a goal, and even for those who need a little encouragement to get closer, this is an excellent read.

A story about "Angels: A Novel" — 2 years ago

A typical chick-lit romp with Keyes’ underpinning of the dark realities of modern life. A good plane read. (I abandoned this one at Gate 20 of Gurahulos airport, Sao Paulo.)

A story about "I Know This Much Is True (Oprah's Book Club)" — 2 years ago

Moderately well written and gives you lots to think about with regards to wellness and illness and anger and upbringing and history and race and love and belonging and all that. The first half is probably longer than it needs to be.

A story about "The Fall" — 2 years ago

What an odd little book. Mostly it came across as dated. A parable, I guess.

A story about "The Mistress of Spices (Macmillan Readers S.)" — 2 years ago

Don’t know about this one. The concept is interesting and so are some of the secondary characters, but the story and the style seem to be trying to be something they don’t quite achieve.

WORTH CONSUMING!

I really enjoyed this – pretty crazy, meandering. A really interesting perspective on the war, and of course, life, the universe, and everything. It’s got a Watermelon Sugaryness about it, but is less opaque.

A story about "The Code of the Woosters (Penguin Modern Classics)" — 2 years ago

Diverting, amusingly plotted, but, I think, ultimately forgettable.
