A story about "What to Eat" — 1 year ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

Marion Nestle’s aisle by aisle tour of the grocery store is enough to make anyone not want to eat anymore. More than anything, it makes me wish I knew a lot more about the food situation in Canada, because if it’s anywhere as bad as the one in the states, I’m very afraid. On the other hand, it makes me wish I could continue to have my head in the sand about the food supply…

I guess the answer is to keep working on my quest to reduce the processed food I consume and up my dedication to local and home-made. Can’t wait to buy that chest freezer.

A story about "Body Traffic" — 1 year ago

A multicultural biomedical mystery set in Winnipeg. Amateurish overall, but an interesting enough story.

A story about "I'm Not There" — 1 year ago

This movie is roughly three times as long as it needs to be and probably best recommended only for die-hard Bob Dylan fans.

While Cate Blanchett is completely amazing and entirely unrecognizable, the rest of the movie is often confusing and sometimes just a disjointed mess.

Je ne comprends pas.

WORTH CONSUMING!

Funny, magical and sweet.
A whimsical tale of a woman with five very different husbands, and a delightful pastiche of film classics from around the globe.

WORTH CONSUMING!

A slightly funny, bitterly honest tale of one man’s journey through transgenderedness to a new version of his old life – as a woman.

I think I just find chicklit generally too shallow and unrealistic. Sorry dudes.

This movie was an awful lot of fun! Emotional and consistently funny and sweet.

A story about "A Canon of Vegetables: 101 Classic Recipes" — 1 year ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

I didn’t actually try any recipes from this book, nor did any particularly captivate me – but the historical botany that accompanies each vegetable made it well worth the read.

A review of "The Plain Janes" — 1 year ago

I was actually planning to read a different graphic novel by the same author, but this was the one the library had. The story did seem a bit low on the ground, with this whole bizarre dichotomy between town and city that was never clearly explained, but I can see how the overarching message would be really empowering to younger women, probably. It did show a world where difference was strength, even if the characters did tend entirely toward stereotype.

A story about "The Catcher in the Rye" — 1 year ago

The best I can think to say about this is that it’s a quick read. I guess there was something to it, but really it was a bit grating. In terms of writing though, it was 100 per cent what it set out to be, and the character never wavered. So while I can see the skill, I guess, I didn’t really enjoy the experience.
