A story about "A Baker's Odyssey with DVD" — 1 year ago

I enjoyed this but am not that inspired to bake from it. Interesting head-notes, and lots of recipes that sound show-stopping, but not that much that screamed ‘make me!’ is all…

A story about "Cloud Atlas: A Novel" — 1 year ago

The second half of this book makes the first half’s slog worthwhile. It’s an interesting take on characters from two angles, a bizarre mix of times and styles and contexts. I like the reflections on perception, on good and evil, on history;s role on the future.

WORTH CONSUMING!

This album is fabulous for throwing yourself bonelessly around the dancefloor while playing a huge imaginary guitar, organ, and drumset simultaneously, and freaking out your cat.

WORTH CONSUMING!

Spider writes Heinlein… and somehow it reads not quite as either.
It’s interesting conceptually, and the story is OK, but I’d probably only recommend this one to the die-hard fan (probably Heinlein’s).

A story about "The Diamond Age: Or, a Young Lady's Illustrated Primer (Bantam Spectra Book)" — 1 year ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

I wasn’t sure about this when I started reading, but as soon as the story started to follow Nell, it picked up. It’s an interesting look at a not-hard-to-imagine future, and I like the way it explores and subverts its world, introducing a number of issues very relevant to our current way of life and never solves any of them.

WORTH CONSUMING!

This series is fairly consistent in being crack up and laugh hysterically funny, though there are some less-amusing episodes in the middle of the season.

I am glad for Murray, at the end, but a little sad for the boys.

Why I gave up consuming "The Exorcist (The Version You've Never Seen)" — 1 year ago

Man. I’m a wimp! Got halfway through and couldn’t hack it.

A story about "The Motorcycle Diaries" — 1 year ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

An interesting collection of vignettes that capture the heart of South America in the early 1950s. It’s kind of amazing to look back on our recent travels and see how little has changed, and how much. Still, the narrative the makers of the movie managed to pull together is just barely discernable in the text. I’d like to read this again, now, in Spanish.

A story about "The Gospel of Food: Everything You Think You Know About Food Is Wrong" — 1 year ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

The first couple of chapters of this mirrored Pollan’s Defense of Food so completely – right down to anecdotes and examples – that I was nervous about plagarism. But Glassner takes his book in a different direction, condemning any and all obsessions about food equally, including those to which he subscribes, like the slow food movement. It has some interesting facts about industrial food, our quest for the novel and authentic, and the genetics of obesity, to name a few. It’s a good addition to the ‘read about food politics’ canon, even if the author is a bit obsessed with letting us all know exactly which tony restaurants he has visited.

WORTH CONSUMING!

What more is there to be said about this? Still, it’s a common-sense set of rules you can use to guide your food journey. It is, of course, a little flippant about access issues, both in terms of money required and living in a region where an adequate variety of food can be raised and stored and sold. It’s definitely worth the (quick) read.
