I went with my boyfriend and his dad, because they wanted to see it and I thought it was just an action flick. This movie has a lot more of what I would call gore than your typical action flick. I ended up keeping my eyes closed for most of it. The nice thing was that there was great foreshadowing, so I knew when the bad stuff was going to happen, and could avoid watching it.

There’s not a single aspect of this movie that is appealing to women. And they guys didn’t especially enjoy it either. Our general review was “pointless.” Like the other review said, if you want a few hours of fluff…. Don’t expect anything more from this movie than violence, driving fast cars, sex, and fighting, and you’ll probably be pleasantly surprised. Just start with low expectations.

The Hobbit

It took me so long to read this book! I started it December 2001 when I first moved to Minnesota and the movies were about to come out. I figured I needed to read the LOTR books before seeing the movies, and had to read this before I could read them. I read the first 10 pages and couldn’t get into it, and set it down for about a year and a half. When I finally picked it up again, I was drawn into the story more and enjoyed it a great deal. It set up the LOTR Trilogy well and prepared me to read those books as well as see the movies. I know quite a few people have said that the books are poorly written, but I didn’t get this sense at all. It was an enjoyable story.

The Poisonwood Bible: A Novel

I struggled a great deal through this book, since most of the negative plot points come from the father, a minister/missionary, and/or stem from that work. As a Christian who has done mission work and studied it in college, it was hard for me to read such a negative perspective on it. But I continued reading it because it was compelling nonetheless. The stories of all the women are engaging – they are all such different characters, yet I found myself able to relate to at least part of each one of them. It was definitely worth the effort I put into it.

Flappers and Philosophers (Enriched Classics)

I’ve never much cared for short stories, but since I now live near one of F Scott Fitzgerald’s residences and there’s a whole section on his works in our public library (St Paul, Minnesota), I thought this book would be an easy introduction. I was pleasantly surprised – most of the stories were delightful. I went out and bought several other of his books after reading this one, and they’ve all read fairly similarly. If you like this, you’ll probably like his other works. If you need an introduction to F Scott Fitzgerald, this is a good place to start.

A Week in the Zone: A Quick Course in the Healthiest Diet for You

I think I would have enjoyed this book more and been able to stick to the plan if there were more recipes that were actually tasteful or even just edible. It was fairly easy to understand, though I had to laugh at some of the serving sizes: 10 cups of lettuce equals one carb. This book is probably more helpful in conjunction with another one by the same author. It doesn’t really stand on its own well, though is a quick read and introduction to the diet.

I read this shortly after my sister got married, and she’d had some struggles with her in-laws. We laughed and were shocked at the actions of some of the main character’s future in-laws. Hilarious read. It’s nice, clean “Chick Lit,” from a Christian perspective without being preachy. I really like this emerging genre of books.

The Red Tent : A Novel (Bestselling Backlist)

I loved this book. So much so that I lent it to my mother and then forgot I owned it and bought a second copy. I’ll admit it was difficult for me to get past the differences between the story and the original Biblical text, but once I stepped back and realized that it’s a fictional book, it was easy to enjoy. The rich descriptions of women’s lives and the culture that surrounded them were beautiful. It really put flesh on the story that I learned a long time ago in Sunday School. If you’re a conservative Christian with a strict view of the Bible, you may not enjoy this book (my mom didn’t), but if you’re willing to be open-minded, your life will be greatly enriched by the experience.

This is a profound book. I found it especially close to my heart since I grew up in the Chicagoland area and the two boys in the story are my age, so while reading about their lives I could think about mine and how different they were.

This movie was spectacular. Hilarious. You should go see it. I haven’t laughed so hard at a movie in a long time. Great satire of “American Idol” and also of George-Dub, without actually being offensive (at least not to me).

Prime (Widescreen Edition)

I saw this movie last weekend with my boyfriend, partly because he likes Uma Thurman and partly because he’s 23 and I’m 4 years older (so the plot was… minorly parallel to our lives). It was funny. I agree with wereldmuis that the unethical behavior of Meryl Streep’s character was unsettling, but there wouldn’t have been much of a plot line without it. The last five minutes weren’t what I would have wanted, but it’s still a good enough movie to request as a birthday gift, and provides some variety from my standards of You’ve Got Mail and While You Were Sleeping.

This could kill me (rated 5 stars)

I discovered the one perfect food I would choose to get fat on, get sick from eating constantly, spend entire paychecks on, or… consume solely for the rest of my life. Ben and Jerry’s Vermonty Python. Oh. My. Goodness. I would compare the experience to sex, if I’d had it. Suffice it to say it is the height of perfection for ice cream. For food in general, really. “Coffee liqueur ice cream with chocolate cookie crumb swirl and fudge cows.” I know the little carton says that there are four servings in there, but that is soooooo not happening. I made myself put it away before turning the carton into one serving, because I thought that might actually make me sick, and it was one a.m. and that didn’t sound fun.
