A story about the last time I consumed "Gladiator (Widescreen Edition)" — 2 years ago

The last time I consumed this, the TV channel had cut out every bit of gore, which made it hard to understand the crowd’s reaction to the fighting. And, having seen the uncencored version, this one is worthless. Why watch a movie that has by definition gory scenes (hence the title) in it, if you are offended by them? Why broadcast half a movie?

Why I recommend "Lady in the Water" — 2 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

It examines more the person watching it than that it tells a new story. The tale is predictable, but excellently exposed.
You either love it or hate it, just as the other consumer’s comments show.
I personally loved it and I smiled all the way through the one and a half hours of the movie.
It reminded me of “Spirited away”, which I have seen just recently.
The high rise appartment block was remeniscent of the bath house in “Spirited Away” and the block in “Kung Fu Hustle”, just like the fairie tale characters living in it. They have to to explore their functions in the story, such as The Healer or The Guardian, therefore finding their purpose, their place in the Universe that is this particular moment in time. The task must be done or else, and only when the lead character finds his strength and pulls through with all his might (and goodness in his heart), then the world will be cured.
There were a few scary moments, but I get scared easily when I am completely taken up with a movie.
I also nearly cried at the end, which I didn’t expect at all.

Call me naive, but I like a good bed time story.
If you’ve seen “Lady”: I’d like to eat a cookie, not wipe the spilt milk off my face, curl up on the sittee and listen.

Why I recommend "The Wee Free Men: A Discworld Novel (Unabridged)" — 3 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

Ever wondered why you think that you are thinking a particular thought? That’s having “Third thoughts”.
Little Tiffany Aching has a few of them:
Second and Third Thoughts and First Sight.
I am not very good at any of these.
This book is a delight.
If not any other beings from the discworld, I wish the Nac Mac Feegle (also known as Pictsies, the Wee Free Men, the Little Men, or ‘Person or Persons Unknown, Believed to be Armed’) were real. They are right up my street. I love their way of teaching the cat not to go afterrr them wee burdies.
Ach, Crivens!

Edit: This was incidentally the 3rd time I read this book. So now I have to read “A Hatful of Sky” again. I guess I’ll give it a break, though.

Why I recommend "Thud! (Discworld) (Discworld Novels (Paperback))" — 3 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

It gives you more insight into troll lore.
I completely underestimated them and I read this book with even more joy than “The Fifth Elephant”, which concentrates on dwarf culture. And some light (or darkness) gets shed on the mystery of the Koom Valley Battle (who ambushed who?).
Loved it. But then, I am a Pratchett fan through and through.

Why I want to consume "Jingo" — 3 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

The chorus of a song by MacDermott and G. W. Hunt commonly sung in pubs around 1878 gave birth to the term. The lyrics had the chorus:

We don’t want to fight
But, by Jingo, if we do,
We’ve got the ships,
We’ve got the men,
We’ve got the money, too.

I’ve read Jingo many times, but now that the world is in so much turmoil because of the jingoism of certain countries, I am re-reading it to get my mind off awful things and have a laugh…

Why I recommend "Wild Swans : Three Daughters of China" — 3 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

Boy, this was a tough one. If not for my inability to memorize chinese names which makes it difficult to finding my way through Chang Jung’s extended family history, then for the physical suffering and loss of freedom of thought for the whole Chang family. The feeling of relief at the end of the book but also the sadnesse it leaves you with make “Wild Swans” an essential read for unknowing westerners like me.

Why I recommend "Lauschgift" — 3 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

OK, it’s completely in German. But that just goes to show. German is an excellent language for rap lyrics thanks to its (infamous) pronounciation and rhymability.
The Fanta’s lyrics are cheeky, funny, “lefty”, self-ironic, pro-weed smoking and shroom eating, but also about non-conformity, your self-image, being humane, taking the piss out of bus conductors, dissing their (by now irrelevant) arch-rivals the Roedelheim Hartreim Projekt, and riding Shai-Hulud, the worm god of the planet Arrakis (something for Dune fans like me). Thomas D, Andy Y, Smudo and Hausmarke are my personal German heroes of the 90’s and German hiphop and this is their best album, IMHO.
The album ends with a recording of Albert Einstein’s voice, talking about not losing your “good humour”. I intend to take this advice.

How "Never For Ever" changed my life — 3 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

My sister re-introduced me to this album.
I ended up performing various Kate Bush songs during my studies at the Amsterdam Conservatory, including “The Wedding List” on my recital and “Babooshka” as a swing tune on one of the “normal” performing evenings.
This album is simply amazing. Her strange high voice, her lyrics, her compositions, her brother’s fretless bass, it’s all there.
