A review of "2046" — 3 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

I have a love/hate thing with Wong Kar Wai’s films. They all have moments of brilliance, but none that I have seen have completely blown me away. The same can be said for 2046. There were sequences that were just plan amazing and others that were amazingly boring. Like all his films though, it sure did look pretty!

For people who are interested in watching this movie because a lot of the descriptions say it has to do with time travel…This couldn’t be further from the truth! The only thing that has anything to do with the future or sci fi is the main character’s written stories being shown on screen. The characters themselves never travel through time or go to alternate universes. Although, these are the best sequences in the film. I think I may have liked the movie more if I hadn’t read things like “Through time travel and parallel worlds, this lushly photographed romantic drama explores Mo-wan’s relationships with various women, including the one he truly loves, Su Lizhen (Gong Li).” I was let down when neither of those things showed up in the movie.

The cast is great though with Gong Li and Tony Leung putting in particularly nice performances.

Overall, it was okay, but I don’t think I would ever watch it again.

NOT WORTH CONSUMING

This movie should have been good. Meryl Streep and Uma Thurman couldn’t save it. It was a lot longer than it should have been and was super boring.

Bo-ring!

WORTH CONSUMING!

Barely worth consuming! I mean, I did fall asleep about 3 times during the movie. I wasn’t tired when it started, but it was so boring. The monsters looked awesome, though. The action was just really repetitive. However I loved the fps sequence! I know I should probably be ashamed to admit that, but it was fun! Plus I am a sucker for Karl Urban. What can I say? So, I guess it’s worth consuming if you like Karl Urban or first person shooters. Or perhaps you could just fast forward to the last 15 minutes.

NOT WORTH CONSUMING

I loved Cube so much. It’s one of my very favorite movies. I think that’s why I watched Cube Zero even though I knew it was going to be crap. It got worse and worse as it went. It had one clever bit at the end, but the rest was pretty much Z-Movie rubbish.

WORTH CONSUMING!

I’d been anticipating this movie for a year and I wasn’t disappointed. I thought it was great. I haven’t a complaint about the story, the visuals or the music. While it’s inspirations are quite easy to spot, it didn’t make it any less enjoyable. It really is too bad that this didn’t get a wide release.

That being said I don’t think this will be a movie that everyone will like.
