Disappointing Sayers Imitation — 1 year ago

NOT WORTH CONSUMING

I wanted this book to be good. I love the Lord Peter mysteries, and was excited to find yet another.

Sadly, this falls far short of the originals. Not only is the story fairly predictable, it is also marred by the modern mania for immorality. I don’t care to read the lustful musings of even aged sinners! And I pity the author who attempts comedy through innuendo.

This book just felt dirty.

A review of "Getting Serious About Getting Married: Rethinking the Gift of Singleness" — 1 year ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

Debbie Maken takes a look at what the Bible says about marriage. She doesn’t go by what our culture teaches. She doesn’t hold to what sounds or feels good. She asks some hard questions, and comes to the conclusion that marriage is the Biblical normative pattern. It’s not an equal option with singleness, it’s God’s design.
She’s very passionate about the plight that many single women find themselves in: ready to be married, but no man in sight. And no wonder—men are practically expected to live a perpetual childhood. No responsibilities, no ties. The answer is a return to Biblical thinking.

Especially fascinating are the chapters dealing with the common advice given to singles, and the historical view of marriage and family.

A word of advice: don’t just skim the book. Read it word for word. It may change your life!

Why I recommend "A Serrated Edge: A Brief Defense of Biblical Satire and Trinitarian Skylarking" — 1 year ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

The church today needs this defense of satire. We have a lot of ill-founded assumptions of what constitutes Biblical speech. Sometimes someone has to speak out against blatant error. Wilson explains who, when, and why.

Why I recommend "Lighted Heart" — 2 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

This is a must-read for all lovers of the fiction of Elizabeth Yates. It’s the autobiographical story of how she and her husband found new ways to enjoy life after he lost his sight. A heartwarming tale of joy in adversity. I especially enjoyed the descriptions of farm life in middle-20th-century New England.

A story about the last time I consumed "The Little Mouse, the Red Ripe Strawberry and the Big Hungry Bear (Child's Play Library)" — 2 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

My little brother loves this book. So do I. The pictures are lovely, the story quite funny, and, best of all, it’s easy to read aloud. No “see Dick run” here! Every word counts.
