Violence, brain-washing, GTD and radiant; one of the best political films, ever (rated 5 stars)

Der Baader Meinhof komplex

by Uli Edel

Brilliant film about the Baader-Meinhof group, i.e. one of the most active modern terrorist groups. The film starts with showing people peacefully demonstrating against the Shah of Iran and his wife who were visiting Western Germany in the late 60s; on signal, supporters of the Shah and the police rush and senselessly beat demonstrators into pulp. The imagery is one that will not soon leave my mind, being extremely reminiscent of what happened in the G8 protests at Genoa and Gothenburg about 30 years later. Back to the film: the leftist movement is at this time very much against the police state that Western Germany has become. As the hippie 60s obviously didn’t help much with turning things around, the early 70s – brought on by with the assassinations of Martin Luther King and Bobby Kennedy, the US carrying on their war in Vietnam with Nixon coming into power and the West German government was being accused for merely being a puppet in the hands of imperialist America, some people wanted to turn things around without using flowers and kind words. These people were seriously convinced that the word was revolution, and used kidnapping, bombs and bullets for change. This film is the story of the core of the Baader-Meinhof group, and it’s close to the best political cinema I’ve ever seen; the direction, the acting, the script, the editing and the music…it’s as if the make-up is washed away from how political films usually are, leaving the viewer to decide what’s right and wrong. It’s interesting to see how the Baader-Meinhof group works as the members are increasingly isolated and brain-wash each other by simply interacting with their hardcore ideals as the base. Brilliant and highly recommendable, of course no matter what your personal political ideas are.

It questions the viewer through simple symbolics and metaphors and doesn’t demand much. Timothy Spall acts very well in a straight-jacketed style. All in all this is a quite broken film, as if the screen-play was made using a lot of seemingly good ideas, but together they make for a fragmented film. Good direction, yet flawed as a whole.

This is her autobiographical story from slightly before, during the named ordeal and the aftermath, e.g. adapting to life, growing up and ending the book with the trial of her accosters. Using a very matter-of-factly style of describing what her thoughts were at the time of being kidnapped as well as her most recent mind-set, the story really gripped me; Dardenne also details her failings to communicate with her mother before the kidnapping and how that deeply affected her afterwards. The final chapter is in my eye the best, and really put everything on its edge. I think the subtleties of Dardenne’s (and her co-writer’s) way of expression really brings forward the horrors of what happened to her, and glancing at what might have happened to several other young girls and women who were abused and murdered by Dutroux and his accomplices. A singular and horrific read.

I wish I had! Even though the subject is interesting, I wonder how much Eichmann has been dramatised in order for this film to have been made. Was he really a womaniser? I thought he was just a cold-hearted, psychopathic bureaucrat who did everything he possibly could to avoid capture. I think the film-makers really missed the point with this one. What happened with dissecting Eichmann’s guilt as the “architect of the Holocaust”? Superficial, trying and really badly acted, this film has nothing more to give than a few nice shots of surroundings that look like great matte-paintings. Nothing more. Don’t see this.

I’ll happily say I think those critics are wrong. In my opinion, the film points out prejudice in the viewer and yes, I’m one of the persons who thinks everybody is prejudiced about a lot of things, even though some of us may be scared to admit it at first. This film is a good step towards realising this, by plainly showing how racism, nationalism and other isms play a daily role in our lives. Fast-paced, catchy, horrible and funny, I strongly recommend it.

He’s bullied in school, she’s a vampire. Visually very appealing, giving the Swedish winter a warm huddle, but at the same time it’s fair to say the film is flawed as far as tempo and plot is concerned. At first I was quite taken by the film, but having dissected it a bit, it’s not all that. Visually very appealing with great sound, but in the end, the film doesn’t hold up very well.
