A review of "Lions for Lambs" — 1 year ago

I’m in agreement with Steen.. A few good points were made here and there by the characters of Streep and Redford, but overall it felt like a movie commissioned by the Bush Admin. to plant the seeds for an attack on Iran. You know—Americans aren’t that great at differentiating Hollywood from real life, so if Tom Cruise says Iran is a threat, well then it must be.

It was another war-glorifying film complete with numerous references to “The Enemy” and false statements that movie-goers may very easily take as facts.. i.e. it’s okay to be in Afghanistan because they attacked us on 9/11. Actually, 15 of the hijackers were from Saudi Arabia and the funding has been traced to Pakistan. And a nuclear Iran, are you kidding?

Why I recommend "War is a Racket: The Anti-War Classic by America's Most Decorated General" — 2 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

This short book/essay is every bit as relevent now as it was back in the mid 30’s when it was written. In fact, it’s astounding how relevent it remains. And it’s sad to see how little has changed. It always has been and seems like it will always be war for profit, not democracy.

Butler has three recommendations to stop future wars and those should be the focus for a brand new anti-war movement. Read the book to get those three ideas, it will mean more than me just copying them here.

PEACE.

Why I recommend "American Blackout" — 3 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

Everyone American citizen needs to see this movie because we so easily forget the disenfranchisement of our fellow voters and the subsequent thefts of the Presidential elections in 2000 and 2004.

This movie follows Democratic Congresswoman Cynthia McKinney in her efforts to bring justice to disenfranchised voters. It also covers her work of demanding answers to what political leaders really knew beforehand about 9/11. This woman is AMAZING and has restored my faith in political leaders. There are still some honest ones out there, who knew. If we had more McKinneys in office, this country would be an entirely different place.

Most of the movie focuses on McKinney’s state of Georgia and the 2000 election. The 2004 part focuses mostly on Columbus, Ohio. As I am from Columbus, it was very depressing to relive that day all over again, but we need that reminder, we can’t afford to be complacent any longer!!

Why I recommend "Out of Harm's Way" — 3 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

This book is so amazing!! Anyone who loves animals owes it to themself to read it. I read it again every year or so, and every time I finish I have this overwhelming desire to commit my life to emergency animal rescue. Maybe one of these days I’ll actually find a way to do it. Until then, I’ll read this book and continue to be inspired by Terri who actually made rescuing animals her life’s work.

A story about "The Education of Shelby Knox" — 3 years ago

The May 2006 feature of the Ironweed Film Club:

Lubbock, Texas has an abstinence-only sex education policy in its schools—and some of the highest teen pregnancy and STD infection rates in the nation. Shelby Knox is a Lubbock high school student, a good Baptist girl—and the most outspoken advocate of sex education in town. The Education of Shelby Knox follows Shelby for three years as she grows into her own beliefs, which increasingly differ from those of her family, church, and community. Marion Lipschutz and Rose Rosenblatt provide a fascinating look at a culture and issues that upon first look can only be seen in Blue and Red, but where with closer scrutiny the color lines begin to bleed. Shelby Knox received the Sundance Film Festival Award for Best Cinematography and the Audience Award at the SXSW Film Festival.

A review of "Animal Farm" — 3 years ago

WORTH CONSUMING!

Animal Farm is a story of rebellion, revolution, the haves and have-nots, propaganda, hypocrisy, and power. All acted out using the most simplistic setting you can get, a bunch of animals on a farm. It’s a great look at the ebb and flow of power, and how idealistic visions of utopia can quickly fade away once someone decides to put themselves above the original goal.

On many occasions you’ll find yourself thinking Hey, Napolean sure is like “insert name here”, or Wow, those sheep are exactly like all those fools at the Bush rallies, mindlessly chanting the same crap over and over again. “Four legs good, two legs bad!” easily equates to “Four more years!”

While it’s truly sad that you can draw so many parallels from the book, it does make you laugh at times. And it’s a very quick read which is great if you’re like me and have a history of not finishing books.

Highly recommend this!
