WORTH CONSUMING!

Almost all of the movie was pointless and stupid. But the small, VERY SMALL, portion of the movie that was funny and clever didn’t make me regret watching it. It’s classic Will Ferrell… well maybe even a little bit more stupid than that, so if you don’t like really stupid humor, then pass.

NOT WORTH CONSUMING

cries this was the most painful movie to watch EVER. The plotline and overall feeling was one of this cheesy children’s movie, but it was full of so many sleazy sex references, jokes, and content that the end result was absolutely absurd. There was ONE hilarious moment in the film which didn’t actually happen in the film - in the preview Wilson breaks up with Thurman and she rockets through the ceiling, he pauses and whispers “Oh noooo” - I laughed for a really long time at that but unfortunately it was a manufactured little scene from a bigger scene in the movie which was unfunny and the line wasn’t even in there (at least, I waited for it and I didn’t hear it, I could be mistaken I suppose).

That’s not my biggest problem with the movie, but I thought it was disappointing that the reason I wanted to see the movie wasn’t even in it at all.

The characters had potential and I think it could have been a much better movie if it weren’t for the low-brow slap stick and sex. I’m not against sexual jokes or anything, but there were SO MANY and most of them were NOT FUNNY. They should have just made it a more family oriented film (again, the tone was SO Disney channel cheesy that I’m not sure why they didn’t go all the way in the first place) and maybe I would have actually liked it.

NOT WORTH CONSUMING

For such a pointless movie (with no message other than the one they beat you over the head with, which isn’t really that deep or meaningful in the first place), this movie wasn’t even enjoyable/fun!. I do like Sandra Bullock movies (While You Were Sleeping, 28 Days, etc) so it’s not just that these type of movies aren’t my cup of tea, I also enjoy dramas and the idea of time travel, etc. It just didn’t work. Partly it was that there wasn’t any entertaining bits in the middle, really. Also it might have been partly because Keanu Reeves sounded like a robot and didn’t really seem to have any chemistry with Sandra Bullock or even any charisma as a person. Gorgeous, maybe, but when he talks… =\ Their relationship seemed forced and silly. I wanted to like the movie, and maybe if it were a book or if they’d had more time it would have been better, because it was a little weak on details. For such a predictable plot (Really, who didn’t have it all figured out in the first few scenes of the movie?), there was too much time in foreshadowing and pointless sidetrips.

I guess I just lament that it wasn’t done differently because it could have been really good. Either it should have been more fun or more serious, but it wasn’t really either. And I didn’t even spend time trying to make it all “make sense!” (I was the one in the room going “Okay, let’s just suspend our disbelief for a minute…”)

WORTH CONSUMING!

It started out even better than The Eyre Affair. I was giggling and delighted… until the plot started getting going. Once the main conflict for the rest of the book is established, the book continues to slide downhill steadily until the disappointing and baffling ending. I was almost bored to tears by most of the Jurisfiction stuff, but the few bright spots of hilarity and brilliant-strangeness were almost enough to make up for it.

A story about "Lirael: Daughter of the Clayr (The Abhorsen Trilogy)" — 3 years ago

I agree pretty much completely with the person who reviewed this before me: The entire thing was an excruciating build-up to what I hope is the conclusion in the final book. There wasn’t really a climax of any kind nor any conclusion; just build up. My second major beef with the book was the aggravating realism instilled in the characters. In most books this would be a huge plus… unfortunately, the characters are teenagers. Can you say “Poor me syndrome”? Even if you weren’t that way as a teenager, the main characters will no doubt remind you painfully of someone you knew/know which can be an annoying distraction. On the plus side, I enjoyed the interesting magic and extra insight into the world. Plus animal companions are awesome, I can’t help but think of Mogget as Salem’s white twin (Sabrina the Teenage Witch’s cat). And who doesn’t love that cat?

A story about "Assassin's Apprentice (The Farseer Trilogy, Book 1)" — 3 years ago

I enjoyed how complex the world and plot was. I’ve been reading a lot of more straight-forward books, I suppose, because I really enjoyed the cryptic clues and red herrings and foreshadowings, as well as the background “noise” of the world created. The world Hobb created wasn’t unique in any startling way and parts of it seemed reminiscent of other works and worlds created by other authors, but the overall organization was pleasantly new enough that I wasn’t bothered. Gripes: The beginning showed more promise and foreshadowing than I felt was realized in the book (perhaps later books in the series will fulfill what I envisioned could come to pass), the climax was dramatic but VERY short, there seemed to be many passages and even whole chapters that had really no point to them except as further illustration of the fantasy world, which seemed kind of a cheat; the description should have been more natural, maybe. The characterization was excellent (only a couple characters seemed like stock fantasy characters), but the main character was too withdrawn and introspective for my tastes (too much like myself to fully enjoy it). If anything the book seemed short because of the uneven pacing (a loooong buildup with a very short climax), but the myriad loose ends is precisely to my tastes.

WORTH CONSUMING!

I didn’t think the characters were anything special (I almost disliked the main character) and the relationships seemed rather fake. It was kind of like a movie, where people have certain relationships just because it’s expected, but there hasn’t been any development or reason for it, really. I know it might seem an obvious choice, but I loved the Mogget character (he reminds me of many of my pets, which is a fun thing) and I thought that the world, the magic system, the history and all that was interesting and relatively unique.

A story about "The Book of the Dead" — 3 years ago

I am a huge Douglas Preston + Lincoln Child team fan, but honestly the book was a huge disappointment. Unlike other recent books, it actually started to get better nearer the end, but at least 75% of the book was just “blah” and predictable. Interestingly, it’s full of good scenes and ideas in retrospect, but as I was reading them they just didn’t seem that striking. There were only a few sections that were real “page turners” and the rest was… well, as I said, “blah.”

I would have still read it if I knew how it would be because it does reveal some information and move the characters forward. And I’ll still probably read the next one.

There is only one scene in this movie worth seeing, and unfortunately its not good enough to warrant repeated re-watching (and it gets less funny every time you see it). Boring… boring… yawn... boring…

WORTH CONSUMING!

I feel ill.

No, it wasn’t the best movie EVAR. Yes, I believe that everyone knows not to eat out three times a day every day. But what did you expect? For him to literally drop dead after a week? Not even the doctors expected that kind of decline in health. The point was to show what a worst case scenario would be like. I was floored and disgusted, but still entertained. I felt like it lived up to my expectations—don’t go in expecting him to gain 200 pounds or something, because that’s just stupid, the human body doesn’t work that way. What did happen to him WAS amazing, whether you realize that or not (desensitized as we are to amazing feats after watching X-Men or infomercials or what have you).

Are you starting a diet? I recommend watching this the morning of the first day. Man, it would be sweet.
